WHERE:
Houston Fire Station 78  - 15100 Memorial Drive (near Turtle Creek)
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
It was a few days into the New Year and the Johnsons were doing a light workout in their community gym, when Al Johnson suddenly collapsed. His wife of 38 years, Doris, realized she did not have her cell phone!  She ran outside the building and cried out for help.  Neighbors responded, started CPR and called 9-1-1.

HFD was dispatched and Ladder 78 happened to be across the street.  They came quickly, took over CPR and used their AED (automatic external defibrillator), shocking Al twice.  HFD paramedics arrived and administered more shocks and advanced life support measures.  Al’s pulses were restored and he began waking up while he was transported to a local hospital.

Just a few weeks later, he fully recovered and returned back to work!  The Johnsons are coming to Station 78 to thank bystanders, the HFD responders and the 9-1-1 calltaker!  Dr. David Persse, HFD EMS Physician Director will recognize everyone that provided important links in the chain of survival which made it possible for Al Johnson to survive!

The 5 links in the adult Chain of Survival are:
1.    Immediate recognition of cardiac arrest and activation of the emergency response system
2.    Early cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) with an emphasis on chest compressions
3.    Rapid defibrillation
4.    Effective advanced life support
5.    Integrated post-cardiac arrest
