Date: 06/19/2018
Carbon Monoxide Incident at Food Distribution Warehouse
WHAT:
Carbon Monoxide Incident with People Sick
WHEN:
June 18, 2018 at 4:30 p.m.
WHERE:
3145 Produce Row, 77023
INJURIES:
37 workers were transported to area hospitals, others evaluated on scene.
CAUSE:
The cause was found to be the exhaust from an outside contractor running equipment in the enclosed area.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Firefighters arrived on scene and began to investigate reports of multiple sick workers inside a warehouse. Upon investigation, construction workers were found to be using gas powered equipment inside the warehouse with minimal ventilation. Approximately 50 to 60 workers were evacuated from the structure to be evaluated by EMS with 37 workers transported to local hospitals for possible symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning.

The HFD Hazardous Materials Team took readings and the warehouse manager was advised that the building needed to remain vacated for the night and an environmentalist needed to evaluate the conditions prior to the workers returning to work in the building. A health inspector was also contacted due to food products being inside the building and exposed to the high levels of carbon monoxide.

More than 50 HFD units were dispatched to this scene including HFD's Ambus. Metro also provided a bus. HFD cleared the scene at 9:42 p.m.
