Another successful mid-winter celebration in the Keweenaw!

Last weekend we celebrated Heikinpäivä with the usual flair of the parade, Finnish games at Quincy Green, the tori inside of the Finnish American Heritage Center and of course the famous polar bear dive into the frigid waters of the canal. It was great to see many of you out there celebrating this event!

Check out our Facebook page for a video and photo album from the event.
The Finnish & Nordic Studies Program at Finlandia University is pleased to announce the 2018 class of Paloheimo Fellows. The Paloheimo Fellows Program is a unique, competitive study-abroad program offered to students of any major at Finlandia University in which selected students follow a spring term course in anthropological field research methods combined with individualized research on aspects of Finnish society of interest to the student. Following this spring semester seminar, students engage in a field research period in May in Finland, meeting Finns from many walks of life and learning about aspects of their society through interviews and participant-observation. Prior classes have visited schools, prisons, public saunas, government offices and other venues to gain insights on Finnish culture. This program is directed by Dr. Hilary-Joy Virtanen, assistant professor of Finnish & Nordic Studies and is generously supported by the Paloheimo Foundation of Solvang, California. First half of 2018 schedule finalized for Finlandia University Gallery

Continuing a long tradition of celebrating the Finnish roots that define the culture of Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula, the Finlandia University Gallery has put together an incredible mix of talent for the first half of 2018. Get out your calendar, and mark down these key dates!

“I’m proud of the lineup we have scheduled for the first half of 2018,” Gallery Director Carrie Flaspohler said. “These artists have put together some incredible work, and the Finnish themes throughout their work will be evident to all who make time to enjoy the art in person.”

Flaspohler is also still seeking alumni to showcase their work in the gallery for the upcoming alumni exhibit. If you or someone you know is interested in showcasing artwork, please contact Flaspohler, (carrie.flaspohler@finlandia.edu or 906-487-7500).

160 students and employees volunteer during MLK Day of Service

The third annual Day of Service in recognition of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was well attended from start to finish, including 160 students and employees getting out into the community at 16 service sites, a great community gathering for lunch at Finlandia Hall that included serving 100 more meals than usual, and a well-attended ceremony at Chapel of St. Matthew Sunday night that kicked it all off.

“We know that Martin Luther king is one of the best leaders in the world, even today after his death,” student Dare Mayomi, told WJMN TV while at Houghton Elementary School. “It’s really good that we use his ideas and ideology so that we can continue to bring the idea of peace and equality into everyone.”
