The Finlandia Alumni Board raised $27,085 on this year's Giving Day in support of Finlandia's Safe Open Plan. During the 24-hour period, $19,085 was raised, but after this total was announced, an additional $8,000 dollar donation was made, bringing this year's total up to $27,085. These donations went to keeping students safe by paying for PPE, baseline Covid-19 tests, campus safety upgrades, and more.

With the Coronavirus pandemic, FinnU is working diligently to keep everyone safe. Students and employees must complete a daily symptom tracker each morning which will tell them whether they are safe to attend class, masks are required everywhere on campus, classrooms have been rearranged to abide by social distancing rules and room capacities have been reduced to 40%. Finlandia is proud of its students and employees for working hard to keep everyone safe.

Terrance Fuller is a 2019 graduate in accounting who currently works as a Senior Accountant for Acrisure, a Grand Rapids-based insurance brokerage firm that is the fastest growing in its industry. Fuller was recently interviewed by senior accounting major Ethan St. Germain. Fuller shared some thoughts on the accounting program and he also gave advice for our current students. 2019 Fiber & Fashion alumna, Jessica Shields, made masks for local businesses this summer. Shields and her husband own a clothing store, Upcycled Hippie, in downtown Escanaba where she makes one of a kind items made from recycled materials. Read more about Shields' masks here.

Finlandia University has been ranked by US News & World Report as a top university for Social Mobility. Finlandia came in at #12 on the list of universities in the Midwest region.

The U.S. Department of Education announced that Finlandia University’s TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) grant program will be renewed for $1,705,835 over five years to help more students succeed in and graduate from college. FinnU’s TRIO SSS program has been providing services on campus for almost 30 years and assists 180 students annually.

The Finlandia International School of Business (ISB) has launched a new e-newsletter. The e-newsletter allows people to stay up-to-date on the ISB alumni, faculty and program news. Currently, the newsletter is scheduled to go out once a semester, but Kevin Manninen, Dean of the ISB, is eager to make the newsletter more frequent.

This year, Finlandia’s Alpha Lambda Delta (ALD) chapter celebrates its fifth anniversary. The ALD is a National Honor Society for First-Year Success and to become a member, students must earn a 3.5 GPA or higher in their first semester at Finlandia.

Finlandia alumna Marie Bonenfant (‘13) recently moved back to the Financial Aid office of Finlandia University as a Financial Aid Counselor.

The Paavo Nurmi Gym has undergone renovations over the last year. The gym, which was built in 1969, is home for the Finlandia University volleyball and men's and women's basketball teams.
Allen Dehority MBB
Allen Dehority has been named head coach of the Finlandia University men's basketball team. He is set to start his duties on Oct. 19.
