We all need to do our part.
That’s the unwavering message from Dr. Deena Hinshaw. Hospitals are overloaded.
Alberta is asking other provinces to take our ICU patients and send us frontline hospital staff.
“Albertans need to go above and beyond the current restrictions to get us all back to normal,” in the words of our overburdened Chief Medical Officer.
We all need to do our part to get back to normal ASAP.
But more than anything – we need to stay connected, be kind, be generous, and be supportive.
Eighteen long months of lockdown has taken a tremendous toll on our mental and physical health.
I have absolutely loved being in the office again.
May we all now work together to get back to a place where friends are real people we get to laugh with in person, undistracted by the unrepentant digital pings of our
tech menagerie.
Meet your friends from across the prairies that you haven’t seen in a while.
And enjoy some lockdown lite reading to remember how much you miss your office further below.

The Office: How I Have Missed Thee

As I arrive hungover and grumpy mid-day on a Friday at the newly polished Startup Edmonton co-working space, I’m greeted with a friendly face:
‘Hey, are you hungry? Help yourself to this massive plate of nachos from Campio we can’t finish,” she says with a smile.
My spirit rises even as my arteries scream, “Take care of yourself, fool!”
Walking past a glassed conference room, I wave at Ken and Joel from Blive.
“Zack!” they exclaim, “Come in and give us some quick feedback.”
“Certainly,” I tell them, wonderfully energized at the prospect of being someone whose opinion matters.
“What is it that appeals to you about live music,” they ask as they do customer research on their live music streaming platform.
My eyes glaze over; romantically reminiscing about the entranced feeling I enjoy when completely taken by an awe-inspiring performance.
“Thanks, Zack, carry on,” they instruct me. “See you at TNT!”
On my way back to my dedicated desk space in the back, I pass by an old emoji-friend I met on slack, as well-dressed as ever. “Hey Zack, I’m about to take my 3rd sales call with an important client!” he tells me excitedly. “I was up past midnight preparing.”
“How many meetings does it usually take to close?” I ask.
“Probably at least two more I guess,” he tells me.
“Knock-em dead,” I tell him, as I head to my dedicated desk.
A few minutes later, while I’m discussing a project with our intern, my emoji friend marches in triumphantly.
“It only took 15 minutes to close!” he exclaims, high fiving everyone in sight, which is to say, the two of us :)
We spend the next five minutes happily distracted hearing about the sales exploits of one local entrepreneur that has clearly found product-market fit.
As my day ends, I bike down 104th, waving at the Drugbank team members drinking coffee at DOSC, admiring the bright QuotetoMe sign, and weaving through the rush hour traffic, comforted by the honks of impatient motorists.
“Daddy,” my daughter yells with an infectious smile when she catches my sight at daycare as if she hasn’t seen me in months.
I smile back, reminded of how much I have missed interacting with humans.
Zack
