5 Party Ideas Inspired by Pumpkin

Well, now it's officially fall in the northern hemisphere. It started last Friday. I think that means we're allowed to start talking about pumpkins now.

1. Host a pumpkin everything party. I just got a Facebook invite this week for a pumpkin spice potluck. The premise is that you bring something (that's not even necessarily homemade) that's pumpkin spice and all the attendees can try all of the things. I think it's brilliant. It's low key. It fits the season. And it's a great excuse to try all of those things that you want to try, but of which you can't seem to bring yourself to buy a full box.

2. Find the best pumpkin beer. My friend Miranda at Spooky Little Halloween has a post all about this. It kind of falls into the same category as wanting to try everything pumpkin spice, but not buy a full box. Pumpkin beers can definitely be polarizing. Some are really great, and some are, well... not. So why not have a tasting to find your favorite ones so you know which ones to treat yourself to this season.

3. Pumpkin decorating. There are so many ways to decorate pumpkins. (If you don't believe me, you can just do a quick Pinterest search to find out for your self.) You can carve them, you can paint them, you can turn them into string art, you can write on them, you can melt crayons on them, you can cover them in glitter - you can even fill them with popcorn. The possibilities are really endless. Grab your friends and give yourself an excuse to get a little creative. You'll have a great decorative piece for the whole season when you're done!

4. Pumpkin iron chef potluck. Back in college I hosted an iron chef potluck series, we would choose a key ingredient and each person would need to show up with a baked good that involved that key ingredient. Pumpkin is one that you would need to be super careful with (so no one gets sick of it), but it could be absolutely delicious if done right. Sure, you've got your obvious pumpkin bread, pumpkin soup, pumpkin seeds, and pumpkin puddings, but the real challenge is to figure out how to use it so subtly that it just gives it a little hint of spice. The first time we ever did this was with avocado, we went way overboard. People didn't eat avocado for weeks after that.

5. Go pumpkin picking. Jess (my Gatherings Podcast co-host) and I got an email a few weeks ago from a lovely lady named Jessica who hosts an annual trip to the pumpkin patch with her friends to select pumpkins. (They then go home and decorate them afterwards, so you could even combine ideas 3 and 5 here.) I thought it was such a great idea! It sounds like such a fun activity to do with your friends - and it sounds like it could make for some great photo opportunities. Many of the pumpkin patches that I've been to have places to drink hot apple cider, browse fall treats, and do other festive autumn things. Make a whole day of it!
