Beers. Innovators. Fun.

Week 115 highlights

Where in TNT is a former poker player and 2-time TNT investor, 4 engineering students, and the Columbian-inhabiting co-founder of Instamek?

We can get used to this, TNT!

Now making friends at Mercer Tavern.
Every Thursday. 6-9 pm.

Andrew from API paid for the first round, Devin gave us another 50 free beer tickets, and Brad covered the remaining bar tab again!

We started the night at 4:30 pm with the CEO of Edmonton's leading hub for life sciences innovation. We ended it by discussing how to more actively celebrate failure in the startup community with the fund manager of AFIII (conclusion: beers, of course!)

It was a perfect TNT evening.

One Sprout Fund partner and former hockey player compared life on a farm in Morinville with spending 20 years in the valley: slower.

Another Sprout Fund partner introduced a computer science student to the community while a double dose of Manzocco took the party up a notch. One of them is looking for more candidates to join CDL Rockies, where she just got a new job. Congrats Marissa!

An entire Areto labs crew celebrating the launch of their digital inclusion product, Coach, shared laughs with the VP of Technology at We Know Training (also a 2-time TNT investor!).

The former program manager at Startup Edmonton was mingling with the current program manager at Startup Edmonton while the What's the Deal team took over their designated corner table.

New TNT community member Matt found us by combing through 50 startup-related organizations listed on the Alberta Innovates website - now that's dedication to finding a good happy hour!

Lawrence was visiting from Saskatoon and is looking forward to hanging out with Jesse and the YXE community next week.

4 UofA engineering students discussed the event management platform they are working on with the author of Pandemic Cash Flow and the CEO of the company that can help you manage it.

There was a raucously loud Jazz band, our beloved musical entrepreneur, and a financial consultant that moonlights as a drummer in a rock band!

Only a matter of time before we host our own TNT music evening!

The Great Alberta Pitch Marathon is back

The application portal is live!
Join the 45 companies that have already applied!

Remember that crazy time we had 108 startup pitches all in a single day? We didn't even know if anyone would attend. Well, 800 people registered, and 18 organizations co-hosted.

This year we're bringing it back bigger and better than ever.

Why participate?

It’s an opportunity to celebrate the success of the Alberta Startup Community. Alberta Startups raised over $455 million in 2020 - help us ensure that number keeps going up, entrepreneurs!

It’s an opportunity to share with your peers all the new and exciting things you’ve accomplished as an entrepreneur.

It’s an opportunity to provide feedback and support to your fellow entrepreneurs.

It’s an opportunity to show the world that Alberta is about a hell of a lot more than oil and gas!

It’s an opportunity to remind our politicians and policymakers that Edmonton and Calgary are among the Top 50 cities for Tech Talent in North America according to CBRE's latest report and we need help moving them up the ranks even further!

News From Across TNT

- Updates from Saskatchewan

Our friends from Saskatchewan are launching their own Pitch Marathon this summer as well! Introducing The Great Saskatchewan Pitch Marathon, check out the website for details.

They've already recruited a dozen co-hosts and are making plans for 2 simultaneous after-parties in Saskatoon and Regina.

Our very own Tim Lynn just booked a ticket for the YQR party!

- Happy Hour in Calgary

YYC TNT Happy Hour kicking off August 19th

We've got our local YYC Ambassadors Jade and Neil actively exploring our YYC Happy Hour options and plan to launch it in conjunction with the Great Alberta Pitch Marathon YYC Afterparty on August 19th.

Stay tuned for more updates!

Politics at TNT: Neutral but still fun!

It's election season and candidates want to meet entrepreneurs.

We think it is awesome that local politicians and political candidates want to engage with the startup community in informal ways by attending our happy hour or host meet and greets that lead into our happy hour.

We encourage our community to attend, share your views, and discuss what issues are important to the startup community.

However, Startup TNT will not be officially endorsing any political candidates; we do of course encourage all members of our community to be politically active and support the candidates you believe in.

A 'Meet and Greet' leading directly into the TNT happy hour is coming up on the 29th with Cheryll Watson. We hope to see all serious mayoral candidates do the same.

Kim Krushell plans to stop by August 5th.

Sponsor Spotlight

Did you catch Catherine Warren at the Canada Day TNT in the park? She competed in a spicy hot wing eating competition, enjoyed locally brewed bevies, and chatted enthusiastically with all the guests to hear their stories and successes. We're glad to have her in our community as the new CEO of Innovate Edmonton

In the few short months since she joined our community, she has assembled a great team that has already accomplished a lot:

Thank you to our sponsors!

We're renewing all our sponsorship agreements this month.

Complete Bar Tab Coverage!

We finished off the $500 bar tab contribution from Startup TNT Director and founder of Endeavour Advisory Brad Clark this week.

Meanwhile, Devin Pope is sponsoring 50 free drink tickets weekly for this amazing crew! Every week we learn about another creative way Devin supports the Edmonton ecosystem - he even cultivates bees on his roof to help ensure we've got a healthy population of local pollinators.

As one TNTer noted: What a huggable host!
