In September, we volunteered at the Manchester Animal Shelter's Mutt Strut and focused on recruitment by planning and holding a New Student Meeting to introduce potential members to our team.

At the Mutt Strut event, our team demonstrated our 2017 robot Two-Face and explained what FIRST is with the purpose to help benefit the Manchester Animal Shelter. At the same time, we assisted other groups in setting up their tents and stations. The event ended up well and the team had lots of fun with the dogs.

Our team worked hard to plan and prepare for our New Student Meeting. This year, we talked about new ways to encourage students to join our team and continue to participate. We planned a new student meeting to present about our team, show them competition videos, tour the shop and work on hands-on activities so they could see what the team was about.

From a returning member:
It was fabulous to be back for another year on the team. After seeing how many people showed up to our new recruitment meeting, really made me proud. It seemed that all the new students showed great interest. We planned various activities displayed to our new students. Our team showcased our electrical board where the new students had to spot some problems with it. The next activity was showing them how we assemble our intake from last season. Finally, we briefly taught them how to rivet.
For those interested in software, we gave them a brief rundown of how our autonomous modes work. The layout for our autonomous modes do not require any prior software knowledge and are much easier to understand. This gave the new students an idea of what we do and how important our roles are without intimidating them. At the new student meeting, we gave those who were interested a Photoshop tutorial. We helped them change the crop, exposure, saturation, and color scale of team photos that were already on the computer. It was a very informational experience for the students who participated. Even if they do not plan on doing Photoshop full time, it is a valuable skill for them to have under their belts.

From a new student:
The presentation was very informative. We got to learn the basics of the robotics team and how it worked. They kept us on our feet and wondering what was going to come next. Not only were they ranked 11th out of the 200 teams in New England but they also showed great leadership and teamwork. It was nice being able to get hands on with new projects, and experience what it would be like to be on the robotics team.
