All 17 SDGs are relevant to the work of ISA, although it currently contributes more particularly to advance 11 of them. The Secretary-General of ISA has commissioned an independent report on the current and potential future contributions of ISA to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda. The report is expected to be released later in 2021. This short teaser presents the early findings of the report and highlights the key contributions of ISA towards the goals and targets set out by the 2030 Agenda.

HLPF 2021 side event discusses the crucial role of ISA in ensuring the sustainable management of the deep seabed and its resources and ISA’s contribution to the 2030 Agenda
ISA hosted a side event on “Ensuring the sustainable management and stewardship of the deep seabed and its resources for the benefit of all humanity” on the margins of the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development 2021. The event was co-sponsored by the Cook Islands, Ghana, Jamaica, Korea, Malta, Norway, Singapore, South Africa and Ifremer (France). Over 140 participants from 64 different countries were in attendance, including senior government representatives as well as representatives from international and regional organizations, non-governmental organizations and civil society, the private sector, the scientific community and academia.

ISA Secretary-General highlights opportunities offered by UNCLOS to spur SDG progress in Africa, LDCs and LLDCs at ministerial HLPF event
Invited to attend the High Level Political Forum (HLPF) on sustainable Development as ministerial respondent in the session on “Restoring the conditions for SDG progress in African Countries, least developed countries and landlocked developing Countries”, the Secretary-General of ISA, H.E. Mr. Michael W. Lodge, highlighted the opportunities opened by UNCLOS to all developing States including the most vulnerable of them as well as the importance of this treaty for the realization of the socio-economic development objectives.

ISA Secretary-General provides update on ISA's work targeting LLDCs at 12th IACG Meeting on the Follow-up and Implementation of the Vienna Programme of Action
During his intervention at the Twelfth Inter-Agency Consultative Group Meeting on the Follow-up and Implementation of the Vienna Programme of Action for LLDCs, the Secretary-General of ISA, H.E. Mr. Michael W. Lodge, provided an update on ISA’s work designed to support landlocked developing States. In particular, Mr. Lodge cited the creation of a network of national focal points for capacity development, the upcoming publication “Landlocked developing countries and the law of the sea: an ocean of opportunity” and the Women in Deep-Sea Research project implemented in partnership with UN-OHRLLS, among other initiatives.

The new Permanent Representative of Nigeria to ISA, H.E. Dr. Maureen Piribonemi Tamuno, presented her credentials to ISA Secretary-General during a ceremony held at ISA’s Headquarters on 2 July 2021. H.E. Dr. Tamuno expressed her country's appreciation for the opportunity to represent the African Group as Vice-President of the 26th Session of ISA’s Council and Assembly.

The Permanent Representative of Namibia to ISA and the United Nations, H.E. Mr. Neville Melvin Gertze, presented his credentials to ISA Secretary-General during a virtual ceremony held on 21 July 2021. Ambassador Gertz is a career diplomat with over thirty years of experience. He became the Permanent Representative to ISA in May 2021.

Stakeholder consultation on draft standards and guidelines for deep-seabed mining closes with 56 written submissions
The Secretary-General of ISA, H.E. Mr. Michael W. Lodge, thanked stakeholders for their contributions to the development of standards and guidelines for deep-seabed mining operations as the public consultation on the draft documents closed on 3 July. The Secretariat received 56 submissions, which will now be reviewed by the Legal and Technical Commission of ISA.

Fourth regional workshop of the Abyssal Initiative project to support capacity development of Pacific SIDS sponsoring States focusing on environmental management and monitoring of activities in the Area concludes successfully
The fourth workshop organized in the framework of the Abyssal Initiative for Blue Growth project (#OceanAction16538) took place virtually from 26 to 29 July 2021 and was jointly organized by ISA and UN DESA in collaboration with the Cook Islands and with the support of NORAD. The workshop successfully increased understanding among participants, especially representatives of Pacific SIDS sponsoring States, of key components of environmental management and monitoring requirements related to activities in the Area.

ISA successfully hosts second edition of the Deep-DiplomaSea webinar series for diplomats and UN senior representatives

The second edition of ISA's Deep-DiplomaSea webinar was held on 8 July 2021 and involved over 50 members of the personnel of permanent missions to ISA and the United Nations. The webinar aims at raising awareness of ISA's role, mandate and work. The third edition will be held in November 2021 and will be announced in due course.

ISA Legal and Technical Commission announces the selection of nine candidates to benefit from training opportunities with BGR, Ifremer and TOML
During July, the LTC has confirmed the selection of a total of nine candidates to benefit from training opportunities provided by contractors in accordance with their obligations under their exploration contracts with ISA. Five candidates will attend the 16th edition of the Deep-Sea Biology Symposium with the support of Ifremer. Two candidates will take part in an offshore pelagic environmental campaign with support from TOML. Two candidates will join a BGR exploration cruise in the Indian Ocean and investigate the sub-seafloor mineralization of selected hydrothermal systems.

ISA is calling for candidates with a minimum of a bachelor’s degree or work experience in marine geology, engineering or technical research for 3 placements for theoretical training at St. Petersburg State University and 4 placements for theoretical training followed by at-sea training onboard a research vessel.

Applications are now open for 14 online training opportunities for candidates from developing States Members of ISA provided by COMRA, in accordance with its obligations under its contracts with ISA for exploration for polymetallic nodules (10 placements) and polymetallic sulphides (4 placements) in the Area.

Deadline extended until 27 September for applications for training opportunities with Marawa and NORI
|
|
|
The deadline for applications for three scholarships to attend the University of the Pacific at its campus in Fiji provided by Marawa and NORI as well as for an at-sea engineering training opportunity provided by NORI has been extended to 27 September instead of 5 July and 16 June 2021, respectively.
