BUILDING MOMENTUM FOR ADAPTATION ACTION: NAP GLOBAL NETWORK PROGRESS REPORT 2018-2019
This progress report on the NAP Global Network’s activities from December 2018 to November 2019 highlights how we have contributed to global efforts for adaptation to succeed at scale and over the longer term by supporting developing countries to advance adaptation planning and action. NAP GLOBAL NETWORK AT COP 25
Governments from around the world are meeting in Madrid, Spain, from December 2 to 13 at the 2019 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 25) to discuss climate policy. Experts from the NAP Global Network will take part in discussions, share research and convene events at the conference, with a focus on gender, private sector engagement, NDC-NAP alignment and vertical integration in NAP processes. ALIGNMENT TO ADVANCE CLIMATE-RESILIENT DEVELOPMENT: CASE STUDIES FROM COLOMBIA, KENYA AND SRI LANKA
These case studies are part of a series of briefs focusing on alignment of country efforts under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Paris Agreement and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. They explore early experiences in efforts to align national-level policy processes under these global agendas, highlighting the context-specific nature of the alignment process. Learn about country-specific examples from Colombia, Kenya and Sri Lanka.
WEBINAR |ADVANCING NATIONAL ADAPTATION PLANNING: ENGAGING THE PRIVATE SECTOR IN THE PROCESS
Adapting to the impacts of climate change, whether at the national, subnational or community level, is not the responsibility of governments alone. In order for NAPs to be successfully implemented and climate resilience strengthened, private sector actors will also need to be involved. WORKSHOP REPORT | SECOND FRANCOPHONE FORUM ON NATIONAL ADAPTATION PLANNING
Over the summer, the Secretariat hosted its second francophone forum on NAPs in Dakar, bringing together participants from Burkina-Faso, Togo, Benin, Mali, Madagascar, Guinea, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Morocco, Haiti and Senegal. This forum focused on accessing international climate finance mechanisms, as well as integrating gender and private sector considerations into adaptation planning. BLOG: PARTICIPATORY DEVELOPMENT OF VULNERABILITY ASSESSMENTS IN BENIN, BURKINA FASO AND SENEGAL FOR BETTER ADAPTATION PLANNING
Vulnerability assessments are an important part of a country’s NAP process, providing evidence for adaptation practitioners to make informed decisions about where adaptation action is needed most. The governments of Benin, Burkina Faso and Senegal conducted nine vulnerability assessments based on capacity building and participatory approaches. NETWORK SECRETARIAT IN ACTION
- The Communications Strategy for Sierra Leone’s NAP was assessed during a validation workshop in Freetown on November 28.
- The NAP Framework for Botswana was assessed during a workshop in Gaborone on November 14.
- From November 11 to 15, the Gambian government hosted a Training of Trainers (ToT) on Gender and Climate Adaptation in Sub-Regional and Community Planning.
- On November 8, Vietnam’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment hosted a consultation workshop on Private Sector Engagement in NAP Development in Hanoi.
- The Nigerian Ministry of Environment, through its Department of Climate Change, hosted two workshops, one on November 5 to validate the country’s NAP framework and another on November 6 aimed at equipping experts from various sectors with the skills needed to conduct basic vulnerability assessments.
- The Peruvian Ministry of Environment hosted a workshop on November 28 to validate the country’s NAP Document Workplan and Design.
- Guinea shared recommendations for making its Green Climate Fund NAP readiness proposal gender-responsive, while Togo also published guidelines for considering gender in their NAP process (both in French).
NAPS IN THE NEWS
- 120 countries have now launched their NAP processes, with 16 countries submitting NAPs to NAP Central.
- Bangladesh’s Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) jointly launched a three-year project to formulate and advance the country’s NAP process, with financial support from the Green Climate Fund.
- Liberia is bolstering efforts to engage the country further in disaster risk management, including developing a national monitoring and reporting (M&R) system to track adaptation investments and implementation.
