Continued rise in air raids targeting non-military sites
New data project on countrywide political violence

Further rise in non-military targeting

Air raids on non-military targets were almost treble those on military sites in January.

Continuing the shift seen in December 2017, the Yemen Data Project recorded almost three times as many Saudi coalition air raids* targeting non-military sites (122) than military sites (44) in January. The number of air raids in January (320) fell 41% from the December 2017 (541) spike.

This continued trend of increased targeting of non-military sites contrasts with the overall pattern of air raids since the start of the air campaign. From March 2015 to December 2017 almost one third of all targets (31%) were non-military and 38% military. In January, 38% of air raids targeted non-military sites, up 2% on December, with just 14% targeting military sites. In 48% of air raids in January the target was categorised as unknown.

New data on countrywide political violence
in collaboration with ACLED
New data released on political violence

In a new data collection project, YDP is working with the Armed Conflict and Event Data Project (ACLED) to collate data on political violence and protest events across Yemen.

In January, ACLED released the first set of data from a collaborative project with YDP.
This data project is particularly valuable given the very limited publically available data on violence and fatalities in the current conflict. Widely cited official UN figures have remained unchanged since the end of 2016.

A total of 7,862 events** were recorded in the ACLED/YDP 2017 dataset with 17,029 fatalities**.
For more details, interactive graphics, and political violence map visit ACLED's website.

The ACLED/YDP data project is ongoing and live data from 2018 is regularly updated and available to download. Historical data, including 2015 and 2016 datasets, will be released later this year.

*Air raid refers to a single incident or air raid, which in turn may comprise multiple airstrikes. It is not possible to generate an average number of airstrikes per air raid as these vary greatly, from a couple of airstrikes up to several dozen per air raid. For example, in the case of a so-called 'double-tap' strike where first responders appear to be targeted by at least one follow up bombing this would be counted as one incident or, as calculated here, one air  raid.

**The methodology used in ACLED data collection differs from the methods used to collate data on the YDP air raids project. See ACLED methodology for more details.
