Hurricane Helene Preparations

Georgia Tourism Partners,

We are continuing to closely monitor Hurricane Helene as it approaches Florida, Georgia, and the Southeast. Our thoughts for safety are with you and all those expected to be impacted by the storm. We are here to help residents and evacuees find shelter locations, accommodations, and additional travel safety information. For the latest storm information, please visit the National Hurricane Center website.

The following information and resources are available for you and your partners.
Shelters

  • Shelter locations are opening today, September 26, to ensure the safety of residents ahead of Hurricane Helene. These shelters will provide a safe place for those in the storm’s path to seek refuge.
  • Shelter locations and road closures are available on the Waze app, available for Apple and Android devices.
Hotels and Lodging

  • Tripadvisor is our primary resource for locating and booking rooms for evacuees. It is linked on the Explore Georgia storm web page.
  • This site pulls the most current, real-time inventory from hotel and lodging vendors.
State Parks Lodging

  • Available campsites at Georgia State Parks are published on the Explore Georgia storm web page, including non-traditional options like horse stables.
  • Pets Welcome provides pet-friendly lodging options updated in real-time and searchable by location.
State Visitor Information Centers
  • Six of the state’s nine Visitor Information Centers will be closed as of noon on September 26, including Valdosta, Columbus, West Point, St. Marys, Port Wentworth (Savannah), and Augusta.
  • Facilities, including restrooms, are open 24/7 at the Valdosta, St. Marys, and Port Wentworth (Savannah) centers, which are situated on or near evacuation routes. All other restrooms are open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • The Visitor Information Centers in Ringgold, Tallapoosa, and Lavonia are currently open and operating under the standard hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
  • Any changes in operating hours will be kept updated on the Explore Georgia storm web page.
