Lawmakers Revive, Pass Trans Sports Ban Bill

In a last-minute push by Republican state lawmakers, the stalled bill to ban transgender girls and women from participating in school sports passed the senate. At the time of the writing of the Weekly Digest, Gov. DeSantis had yet to sign the bill into law but had vowed that he would.

For more: Florida lawmakers pass ‘cruel’ bill banning trans women and girls in school sports.

Justice Reform Bill Stalled

At the conclusion of the legislative session, SB 1032 stalled in the appropriations committee and failed to be put to a vote of the Senate. The bill proposed giving inmates an opportunity to train educationally and vocationally, allowing them to earn additional time off of their sentence and essentially turning their lives around from inside prison walls.

School Board Mask Mandate Update

Despite more than 200 anti-maskers attending a recent Polk County School Board meeting, the board has said it will continue a mask mandate for the rest of this school year.

However, the issue is expected to be discussed at the May 11 school board works session, when members will consider lifting the mandate for summer school and next year. The work session is open to the public.

If you support a mask mandate until the CDC advises otherwise, please sign this petition. The views of this petition will be considered by the school board.
