CALL TO ACTION: Urge Kemp to VETO HB 838!
Georgia has repeatedly and systemically ignored the abusive conduct of its law enforcement officers against Black people, resulting in an epidemic of murders by police such as those of Anthony Hill, an Air Force veteran killed unarmed and naked; Jimmy Atchison, who was surrendering after hiding in a closet; Jamarion Robinson, who was mentally ill and was shot 59 times; and Alexia Christian, whose death has gone without a proper and transparent investigation since 2015.

In the wake of a global uprising where communities of color are demanding justice and accountability for ongoing police brutality, the Georgia Legislature passed HB 838 which further emboldens police to behave violently and seeks to suppress the voices of those calling for justice.

HB 838 will:
  1. Allow police officers to sue community members for violating police officers’ “civil rights,” or for filing any complaint they find to be false.
  2. Create a stand-alone criminal charge where community members could face up to five years in prison or face a $5,000 fine for the harm experienced by a police officer or for damage to their property because the individual is a police officer.
In passing HB838 in the midst of calls for police accountability and justice for Black lives, the Georgia legislature continues and even amplifies this trend of willful, malicious, and racist behavior.
We must stop this anti-Black Lives Matter bill today! GLAHR, Project South, Women Watch Afrika, Inc., and many others urge you to call Gov. Brian Kemp and tell him to veto this bill at 404-656-1776.

NO A LA HB 838: Proyecto de Ley “Anti-Las Vidas Negras Importan”

Georgia ha ignorado reiterada y sistemáticamente la conducta abusive de sus oficiales de policía en contra de personas Negras, resultando en una epidemia de asesinatos tales como los de Anthony Hill, veteran de la Fuerza Aérea, QUIEN FUE ASESINADO MIENTRAS SE ENCONTRABA desarmado y desnudo; Jimmy Atchinson, quien se estaba entregando después de esconderse en un closet, Jamarion Robinson, quien padecía de enfermedades mentales y fue ASESINADO DE 59 DISPAROS; y Alexia Christian, cuya muerte se ha ido sin ninguna investigación adecuada y transparentes desde el 2015.

A raíz de un levantamiento global donde comunidades de color estan demandando justicia y responsabilidad por la continua brutalidad policiaca, la Legislatura de Georgia APROBO LA PROPUESTA DE LEY HB 838, la cual "envalentona" mas a la policia a comportarse violentamente y busca suprimir aquellas voces que piden justicia.

La HB 838:
  1. Permite a oficiales de policia demandar miembros de la comunidad por violar “los derechos civiles” de los oficiales de policia al presentar cualquier queja que consideren falsa.
  2. Crea un cargo criminal único donde miembros de la comunidad puede enfrentar hasta cinco años en prisión o una multa de $5,000 por cualquier daño experimentado por un oficial de policía o daños a su propiedad porque el individuo es un oficial de policía.
Al aprobar la propuesta HB 838 en medio de llamados a la responsabilidad policial y justicia por las vidas Negras, la legislatura de Georgia continua e incluso amplifica esta tendencia de comportamiento deliberado, malicioso y racista POR PARTE DE LOS OFICIALES DE POLICIA.

Debemos parar este Proyecto de Ley anti- Vidas Negras Importan HOY!
