Stories. Ideas. Fun
Week 117 highlights

River valley walks. Dreamers in a flock. Deep, insightful talks.
Be it innovators, mentors, investors, or cheerleaders,
At Startup TNT, we all perfectly interlock :)

Stories and Happy Hour.
(And newsletter Takeover)

TNT is now @ Mercer Tavern.
Every single Thursday. 6–9 pm.

While Zack is away to see his family in Connecticut, now is the time for your fearless TNT intern to take over this newsletter!

Here it goes...

Under the guidance of Emily Craven of Story City, we got together at the rainbow road for the Origin Stories Walking tour and strolled all the way to the Stollery, stopping every few minutes to hear special stories about local Edmonton companies that were born at each location. We were all so different. Different careers, age groups and interests. But at TNT, we celebrate our differences and cheer on our similarities.  This happy hour was a reminder of it.

Hearing ad hoc personal stories was a refreshing bonus. We had one shared love for the River Valley and shared pride for these companies' founders. Yet every company story also touched each of us so differently. And this is what TNT is about. We finally ended up at Mercer, inspired and exhilarated.  Download the free Story City App now for your own, immersive, adventurous story experience.

Founders were there. Politicians were there. We had students. Supporters. Cheerleaders. Scientists. Even an Interior Designer. And a dog.

We were joined by Christiaan Fulton of OntopicalArden and Yasmine from Yaletown Partners joined us. Catherine Warren and her Innovate Edmonton team were there.

The team of What's the Deal was there. Nadhar from DrugBank came by. Kim Krushell stopped by and told us about her role within the startup ecosystem and her company, Lending Assist

Nyssa recounted how she transitioned from a programmer to a marketeer. I invited some of my student friends and may or may not have overwhelmed them with my immense over-excitement. And Dan McEleney of Gfycat brought friends.

This week we are featuring a VIP sober table along with our regular ones for all of our non-alcoholic folks. Join us this Thursday for more fun!

TNT YYC Sneak Peak

Little was planned. Much fun was had. Is there a better way to soft-launch the TNT happy hour in YYC?

On August 3rd, Tim and I drove down to Calgary in a Hondo Civic that had surprisingly little trouble fitting two road bicycles in the back seat. Two-time TNT investor and owner of M-Tech innovations. Idan Shoham greeted us in YYC, gave us a tour of his building, and found at least one other cycling buddy, Josh from Goodlawyer, to join us for an afternoon cycling tour of everything Calgary has to offer. After we visited the new Platform Innovation Center, enjoyed a rooftop lunch of pizza and beet salad overlooking the Bow, talked startup community activation strategy with the new Director of the CIC, we hooked up with Idan for a 42 km trek down the elbow river, around the Reservoir, and right back to the new home of the TNT YYC happy hour: Craft Beer market on 10th.

We showed up hot and sweaty at 5:30 pm, and our table was already full with 10 guests that didn’t register but just showed up to the soft launch party. We immediately felt at home. The waitress poured a cold Hazy IPA as the Executive Director of Innovate Calgary explained a brand new program they are launching to provide seed funding, mentorship, and advisory support to the University of Calgary's commercialization teams.

Richard brought his new team members from 10 Adventures and gave away hats (the guy knows how I love baseball caps). Josh invited us to the Goodlawyer Summit in November. Mike from Levelling up came by with his wife and the inspiration for his startup connecting seasoned artists with understudies. He also brought a founding member of Alberta IoT that would like to invest with us at the next summit!

YEG investor James Freeman just happened to be in the area. He dropped by briefly for a drink joined by fellow investors Jade Alberts and Trevor Dufresne – foreshadowing the day when we can all visit any city in the world on a Thursday and know there’s a great local watering hole for entrepreneurs, investors, and scientists to meet up for a welcoming drink. Carl from our first YYC summit joined us as well, as did a coterie of Cherry Health team members. Jon from Spot, winner of the Spring TNT Investment Summit in Calgary, told us about playing rooftop bocci with his office neighbours as he bounced between Guinness and the ‘Strongest IPA you can find.’ It turns out he used to go Elk-Hunting with Adam from YYZ startup Briefbid

We left Calgary feeling positively uplifted by the can-do spirit Calgarians effuse every day.
Zack!

Jade brought in some peers and guided us towards good times in YYC!

Pitches are Back in August!

We're officially launching the TNT YYC Happy Hour at Craft Beer Market on August 19th in conjunction with the Great Alberta Pitch Marathon.

August is going to be an epic month! Join any of these fantastic events. Join us at 6 PM every Thursday at Mercer Tavern in YEG.

Aug 12th: House Party TNT - Feature a Zack-free evening and a sober table hosted by Ghalia and Abbas (along with our regular happy hour!). We can only imagine the shenanigans that will happen at this crazy party! Reminds me of high school in Connecticut.

August 19th: Great Alberta Pitch Marathon and the YYC Launch Party! We've got our local YYC Ambassadors Jade and Neil actively exploring our YYC Happy Hour options and plan to launch it with the Great Alberta Pitch Marathon YYC Afterparty. The simultaneous parties are now happening YEG, YYC, YXE and YQR(That's right - now you've got to look up the airport codes of cities you've never even passed through to experience TNT in all its glory!)

August 26th: Product TNT with Product Edmonton. Our friends Dave and Nathan are co-hosting a Product Edmonton social with us once again!

Politics at TNT: Neutral but still fun!

It's election season and candidates want to meet entrepreneurs.

We think it is awesome that local politicians and political candidates want to engage with the startup community in informal ways by attending our happy hour or host meet and greets that lead into our happy hour.

We encourage our community to attend, share your views, and discuss what issues are important to the startup community.

However, Startup TNT will not be officially endorsing any political candidates; we do of course encourage all members of our community to be politically active and support the candidates you believe in.
