Status Coup obtained text messages between Pete Buttigieg's South Bend police chief Scott Ruszkowski and a local activist that show the police chief trying to deflect blame away from South Bend police officers who mimicked KKK members from the film "Django Unchained"....while arresting a black man on December 18th.
“Did you know it wasn’t just SB cops there,” Ruszkowski said to a local activist. “I’ll find out who, but I know it wasn’t just South Bend cops,” the chief continued. The messages from the police chief seemed to insinuate it wasn't officers from South Bend Police department who made the comments--a claim Status Coup's new story debunks.
READ our investigative follow-up HERE and SHARE it.

The text messages also show the police chief defending his officers shutting off their body cameras during the arrest.
YOUR support helped fund my reporting in South Bend last week, which helped me build the sources to break this follow-up story (the South Bend Tribune picked up our original story without crediting us!).
But we need to grow to continue investigating and breaking stories like this. In-the-field reporting isn't cheap, but through a growing membership, we will continue to pound the pavement. Heading into the New Year, will you JOIN Status Coup for as low as $5 bucks a month?
The truth depends on it.
