PROPOSAL OF DRAFT EXPLOITATION REGULATIONS RELEASED BY ISA LEGAL AND TECHNICAL COMMISSION
A major step forward towards the delivery of a comprehensive legal regime for deep-seabed mining beyond national jurisdiction was made on 28 March with the release of draft regulations on exploitation of the mineral resources in the international seabed area by the Legal and Technical Commission, a 30-member expert advisory body of ISA. In light of new developments in science and technology, as well as changing economic circumstances, commercial interest in deep sea mining has grown rapidly in recent years. The development of exploitation regulations is therefore a critical element to regulate this emerging industry.  The new draft exploitation regulations will build on the exploration regulations already in place by ensuring adherence to robust environmental standards, including baseline studies, environmental impact assessments, environmental monitoring and management.

CHAPI MWANGO, CHIEF, CONTRACT MANAGEMENT UNIT
1. How long have you worked at ISA?
Nearly 3 and a half years.
 2. What’s the best thing about your role?
Collaboration, the opportunity to work with others to produce results. This is an imperative for the role as working with the exploration contractors intersects with the activities of the Secretariat’s other departments.

Dealing with emerging demands outside the set Work-plans.
 4. Can you describe a current or recent project you enjoyed working on?
The first contractors’ meeting and public forum in 2017 - it was exciting because it brought together several facets of my role: collaborating with several of my colleagues in the Secretariat, relying on every team member to bring her/his expertise and experience to the project; coordinating with the contractors; and interacting with the public during the public forum… and of course, appearing in an interview on national TV!
 5. What advice do you have for prospective ISA candidates?
Identify and consolidate your transferable skills and value your past work experience. Many roles at ISA are unique to the organisation, therefore leveraging and adapting past skills and experience is important to success.
