Happy New Years, everyone! 2018 was a great year for CDs, cassettes, and vinyl, but we're prepped to make 2019 even better. If you've shopped around on Duplication.ca you may have noticed that we have two separate order forms for CD/DVD pressing-- one marked 'Replication', the other 'Duplication'. Wondering what the difference is? We're here to tell you!
CD REPLICATION
Replicated CDs and DVDs are professionally pressed discs created from a glass master guaranteeing reliable playback. They have a silver underside, like the major label albums you would buy from record stores. CD/DVD replication packages include silkscreen disc printing using our state-of-the-art silkscreen press. Packaging is printed on our ultra high quality offset press, finished with an AQ gloss which provides a nice sheen and protects the artwork from fingerprints and scuffs. Our Digipaks are printed on thick 15pt board, upgradable to 18pt board for added oomph and durability.
In other words, if you or your band want to make a big impression, CD replication is the way to go. It is the standard for major label releases and go a long way in illustrating that you're in for a well produced listening experience.
As the lasers on CD and DVD players tend to age and disrupt playback, replicated discs are much more reliable for weak lasers and older disc players. As such, they're optimal for when sending out DVD screeners for film festivals and distribution consideration. The bottom line is that if you want 100% guaranteed playback, choose replication pressing.
CD and DVD duplication is the economical choice while still maintaining superb audio and printing quality. Through duplication the discs are hand copied using digital masters or a master disc. We use professional quality CD-Rs with a light green underside. These discs are vastly superior to the CD-Rs and DVD-Rs found at retail stores, which are prone to failures. Our 2-pass quality control ensures that we will be aware of any errors that occur when burning. Discs are then printed using inkjet, thermal (shiny discs only), or our super high quality 6-colour inkjet. Silkscreen options are also available upon request.
We have developed a number of economical and sturdy packaging options for CD duplication as a way to make sure that our customer base can still receive a professional package at a cheap price. Last year we introduced our line of new and improved short-run cardboard sleeves and wallets, upgrading them from 12pt to 15pt board to match the thickness of our offset products and add durability. We expanded the cardboard sleeves to include 4-panel and 6-panel wallets, allowing you to fold out the package and add extra artwork and liner notes. The offset packages found with CD replication are also available, from Digipaks to jewel cases!
CD duplication is a great option for short-run discs (no minimum order!), demos, and samples. You can send out your band's demo to every radio station in Canada, hustle copies like your favourite backpack rapper, or press a few dozen for a short run tour-only EP. Meanwhile, DVD duplication is optimal for sending out samples of your work for grant applications (you don't want to send cheap-o discs that will stop playing halfway through!), corporate giveaways, or duplicating home/wedding videos for family members.
So that's the difference between Replication and Duplication! In the immortal words of Notorious B.I.G., if you don't know, now you know. Have any further questions? Products or packages you'd like to see from us? Just respond to this email, or hit us up on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.
