Governing solar electronic waste recycling in Kenya
The diffusion of small-scale, off-grid solar devices, such as solar lanterns and solar home systems, have increased rapidly and significantly across countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. The solar electronic waste being generated and disposed of is increasing at a similar pace, which has raised concerns about the overall sustainability of the off-grid solar sector. The solar devices contain various hazardous materials, such as lead and cadmium, the disposal of which may cause serious adverse effects to human health and the environment. At the same time, the collection and processing of solar e-waste in local recycling economies may involve substantial opportunities for employment and income generation.

Motivating both supply and demand
for energy services: the Chilean case

Since its beginning in 2012, the National Energy Efficiency Association of Chile (ANESCO Chile A.G.) has been in the front of promoting energy efficiency and the ESCO model in Chile, dealing with barriers and myths against EE in the public and private sectors. The growth of the ESCO sector and the disseminations of its benefits and visible achievements have been essential for the EE market in the private sector. In the public sector, showing the ESCO model’s compatibility with the rules of the sector was essential. Over 10 years, ANESCOs efforts have been accompanied with public policies, the inclusion of EE as a pillar in long term energy policy and the creation of the public-private Energy Efficiency Agency, now the Sustainable Energy Agency and at the end of 2020, EE is seen as essential for the fulfillment of the National Determined Contribution, the sustainable recovery after Covid-19 and Carbon Neutrality by 2050.

Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals -
Exploring Linkages with Technology Needs Assessments
This briefing note discusses key linkages between the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the UNFCCC-mandated Technology Needs Assessments (TNAs), and the role of technology per se in achieving sustainable development. Reflecting on many years of experience in conducting TNAs, the brief concludes with some recommendations on how to sharpen the linkages between country-driven efforts to achieve climate-related SDGs, including how to link TNAs to specific SDG targets and indicators. In doing so, the brief aims to elaborate on the role and importance of TNAs in both strategic and operational terms, and on how nationally driven technology action plans can be implemented and make an impact.
