Dear friends of the Climate Action in Financial Institutions Initiative,

The end of 2017 saw a continuation of the momentum that the Climate Action in Financial Institutions Initiative begun at COP21. This year the Initiative has had eight new Supporting Institutions join, launched its four work streams for 2017-2018, published the 2017 Climate Mainstreaming Practices Report and created the online Climate Mainstreaming Practices Database. Finally, the contribution that the 5 Principles for Climate Mainstreaming and the Initiative can make to implementing the Paris Agreement has been broadly recognized – both at COP23 and throughout the One Plane Summit.

The Secretariat is pleased in this edition of the Newsletter to summarize the key milestones of the end of 2017.

With our best wishes and we look forward to working with you in 2018.

One Planet Summit

One word was repeated throughout the One Planet Summit, which took place on 12 December in Paris, France: Mainstreaming. The Climate Action in Financial Institutions Initiative – as well as its Supporting Institutions – were visible and present from the start of the week. Perhaps more importantly however, the spirit and ambition behind the 5 Voluntary Principles for Mainstreaming Climate Action were at the heart of discussions. Almost all of the milestones, commitments, actions and programs presented during this busy week can be directly linked to the Five Principles. On the website, discover a brief overview illustrating how the 5 Principles continue to be a relevant and useful framework for moving forward on climate action.

"Mainstreaming!"
On the eve of the One Planet Summit, many of the public and private financial institutions supporting the Initiative gathered to present how they are progressively implementing the 5 Principles for Mainstreaming Climate Action. While supporting institutions reaffirmed their commitment to integrate climate change in their operations, 6 institutions announced that they were joining the Initiative!

Launch of the Climate Mainstreaming Practices Report
The Climate Mainstreaming Practices Report was launched during the "Mainstreaming!" event. It presents the climate action story from the perspective of member Supporting Institutions. At its heart is a range of case studies to demonstrate how the 5 Voluntary Principles for Climate Mainstreaming are being put into practice.
