Greetings to all friends of the Community Remembrance Project (CRP) of Greenville County, SC!
Please plan to join us on Monday, May 31st at 7:30 PM to honor the centennial anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre, also known as the Tulsa Race Riot. Starting on May 31st, 1921 and continuing over 18 hours, a white mob attacked residents, homes, and businesses in the predominantly Black Greenwood neighborhood of Tulsa, Oklahoma. This event remains one of the worst incidents of racial violence in U.S. history—and, for a period, remained one of the least known: News reports were largely squelched, despite the fact that hundreds of people were killed and thousands left homeless.
We will gather outdoors at the Phillis Wheatley Association, 40 John McCarroll Way in Greenville. This event is free and open to everyone, but registration is required. To ensure the safety of all guests, please wear a face covering.
Another important date we want to share with the CRP community: Please mark your calendars for the Soil Collection Ceremony to honor Tom Keith, a man who was lynched in Greenville County in August of 1899. This solemn service will take place at 10:00 AM on Juneteenth—Saturday, June 19th—at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church in Travelers Rest. More details and information about registering to come.
