Meetings of the ISA Council

On the fourth day of its meeting, the Council of ISA took note of the report of the Chair of the Legal and Technical Commission, Mr. Harald Brekke (Norway), on the work of the Commission at the first part of its 26th session, which was held virtually from 24 February to 6 March 2020.
 
The report of the Chair addressed the status of contracts and contractors’ annual reports, the periodic review of the implementation of contractors' plans of work for exploration, contractors' training programmes, the process to consider applications for the extension of contracts for exploration and the transfer of rights and obligations under a contract for exploration.
 
The report also covered the status of development of standards and guidelines for activities in the Area under phases one and two, the status of Annex VI to the draft exploitation regulations concerning the draft health and safety plan and the draft maritime security plan as well as the study of the potential impact of polymetallic nodule production from the Area on the economies of the developing land-based producers of those metals that were likely to be the most seriously affected.
 
Finally, the report addressed the review of the implementation of the environmental management plan for the Clarion-Clipperton zone and development of other regional environmental management plans in the Area and the implementation of ISA’s data management strategy.
On the side lines of the session, H.E. Dr. Maureen P. Tamuno (Nigeria), Ms. Khalilah Hackman (Ghana) and Mr. Andreas Motzfeldt Kravik (Norway) meet with ISA Secretary-General Mr. Michael W. Lodge and Dr. Marie Bourrel-McKinnon (ISA Secretariat) to discuss progress under the Africa's Deep Seabed Resources (ADSR) project and meet current African experts in deployment with the Secretariat.
