Eric Brewer Joins CSIS as Deputy Director and Fellow with the Project on Nuclear Issues

WASHINGTON, June 6, 2019: The Center for Strategic and International Studies is pleased to announce that Eric Brewer has joined CSIS as Deputy Director and Fellow with the Project on Nuclear Issues (PONI). He will focus on nuclear nonproliferation issues after having worked extensively on proliferation challenges while at the National Security Council and in the Intelligence Community.
“Eric brings significant nonproliferation expertise to the PONI team, particularly on Iran and North Korea; his is an important voice on nuclear issues,” said Rebecca Hersman, PONI Director and Senior Adviser, CSIS International Security Program. “Eric will help PONI reach an even broader array of stakeholders and bring energy and experience to PONI’s core mission of developing the next generation of nuclear experts.”
Prior to joining CSIS, Brewer was a Council on Foreign Relations 2018-2019 International Affairs Fellow at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS). He previously served as the Director for Counterproliferation at the NSC where he coordinated U.S. policy to prevent and reverse the spread of nuclear weapons and advised senior White House officials.
“Eric’s experience on nonproliferation issues is a tremendous addition to the research we’re currently doing,” said Dr. Kathleen Hicks, Senior Vice President, Henry A. Kissinger Chair, and Director of the International Security Program at CSIS. “We are delighted that he has joined the PONI and ISP teams.”
Between 2008 and 2017, Brewer worked in the Intelligence Community, first at the Defense Intelligence Agency where he was Senior Intelligence Analyst for Iran, and then at the National Intelligence Council where he was Deputy National Intelligence Officer for Weapons of Mass Destruction and Proliferation and led analysis of foreign nuclear weapons capabilities and intentions, proliferation trends and threats.
Brewer, who is also an alumnus of the PONI program, holds an MA in Security Policy Studies from The George Washington University, an MS in Strategic Intelligence from the National Defense Intelligence College, and a BA in International Relations from the University of San Diego.
