THIS WEEK'S SILK ROAD HEADLINES
Starting with this edition of SRH, the editorial team will provide readers with a brief introduction to highlight some of the most notable developments from the past week, or to point out a particularly interesting analysis that is included in the articles below. We will focus in particular on topics related to China’s new silk road (‘Belt and Road’, ‘OBOR’) initiative that have important geopolitical implications.
Significant news from the past few days includes a report in the New York Times that links Greece’s blocking of an EU human rights statement critical of China to the involvement of COSCO Shipping in the Port of Piraeus. In other words, the newspaper suggests that the new silk road is undermining EU-cohesion with regard to China [In Greece, China finds an ally against human rights criticism]. Also notable is an article in the South China Morning Post that states that the recent decision of Panama to switch diplomatic relations to China – and away from Taiwan - could lead to greater Chinese involvement in the Panama Canal. This could possibly diminish China’s interest in building the planned Nicaragua Canal [China’s diplomatic links with Panama likely to drive major economic benefits]. Finally, the Financial Express presents an analysis of an important dimension of the new silk road that is often overlooked. China’s Belt and Road initiative may have major repercussions for the international expansion of Chinese e-commerce firms. This, according to author Amitendu Palit, could contribute to greater geopolitical rivalry between China and the US in relation to the developing world [Global e-commerce: China-funded digital connectivity in OBOR has massive implications].
