THIS WEEK'S SILK ROAD HEADLINES

The theme that attracts one’s attention this week is the inner dynamics of competition and cooperation among Asian large and small powers in the context of the New Silk Road. Value Walk’s article [Why India-Japan Alliance Won’t Trump China-Pakistan Partnership] points to the competing alliances in Asia between India and Japan on the one hand and China and Pakistan on the other, and how the former will not threaten the latter. NYTimes publishes a Reuters article referring to the same theme by addressing the increase in defense cooperation between India and Japan in the context of the rise of China [With China in Mind, Japan, India Agree to Deepen Defense]. China Briefing’s article [China – India Business Relations Robust Despite Border Hype] addresses the increase in Chinese export to India despite the recent border tensions at Doklam. And finally, ANNX’s editorial [Let’s All Board the Same Train] addresses the careful line Thailand is treading in its relations with Japan and China in the context of the seven agreements that Thailand recently signed with Japan to strengthen its ties with Japan. Asia developing into the centre of global geo-economics is finding itself to become a geopolitical hotspot with these increasing cases of cooperation and competition.

M. Forough To increase awareness of and facilitate the debate on China's Belt and Road Initiative, the Clingendael Institute publishes Silk Road Headlines, a weekly update on relevant news articles from open sources.
