THIS WEEK'S SILK ROAD HEADLINES
The Giants of Asia in Competition
Among the news of items of this week, what stands out is the theme that Asia is the economic hot spot of the world and the giants of Asia are both in competition and cooperation, China with its Belt & Road initiative and Japan and India competing with China. A Forbes article this week [New Silk Road: Japan To Counteract China in Kazakhstan] points to the infrastructure plans in the railway sector to counteract China’s COSCO’s recent shipping and port deal with Kazakhstan. Another article by Christian Science Monitor [As China ups game in East Africa, India tries to guard 'home advantage'] points to China challenging the historical ‘home advantage’ that India has had in East Africa, both economically and militarily. Militarily, China is increasing its influence by, for instance, opening up a new military base in Djibuti. Economically, China with its state-backed initiatives and increasing global economic reach is pushing against the historical presence of Indian diaspora in Africa (numbering in millions) that were historically brought there by the British empire. Asian powers are not only competing in Asia but do so beyond Asia.
