Among the news items of this week, the NYT article [Russia Urges India to Line Up Behind China's Belt and Road Initiative] highlights the increasing cooperation between Russia and India. India has been suspicious of Chinese intentions with regard to Belt and Road (B&R) and did not even attend the May summit in China. The article refers to how Russia is trying to convince India to throw her weight behind the NSR. After a three-day meeting in India, Lavrov (the Russian foreign minister) has urged India not to allow political concerns (such as border disputes with China) to interfere with India’s participation in B&R, especially as it concerns economics and trade: “the specific problem in this regard should not make everything else conditional to resolving political issues".

In another new East Asia Forum.com article [Balancing US–China interests in the Trump–Xi era], the author argues that if the US wants to meet its interests in the region (including preventing Chinese unipolar dominance of Asia) it would do much better if it cooperated with B&R initiative of China: “Unless Washington wants Asia to become a unipolar sphere of Chinese influence, it should become more involved in the construction of regional infrastructure”.
