Book Launching in the Time of Corona

Dear Reader,

Today's newsletter was going to be written by our special guest editor Pete Evans. But things got a bit hot, so we've dropped. Don't worry though, we have honoured our contractual obligations towards him and paid him $200k to not write this newsletter. So that's worked out really well.

Instead, I want to write about something else, of far greater concern.

2020 has been terrible for many reasons. Bushfires, plagues, lockdowns, war crimes, corruption, the corrosion of democratic norms, and, worst of all, pistaccio has become a staple colour in the fashion industry.

But there is one silver lining among all of this. Due to the coronavirus sweeping the globe, book launches have been all but wiped out.

For an entire year, people who attend book launches with questions that aren't really questions but actually just long rambling statements, have been silenced.

As a result, history will judge 2020 far less harshly than many of us expect. By silencing rogue question-askers from book launches, 2020 is, on balance, a net positive for the human race.

Unfortunately, capitalism is underwritten by the relentless progress of technology. The economic incentives to sell more books overrides everything else humanity's hopes and dreams that annoying question-askers have been expunged forever.

Capitalism's answer to coronavirus, is, of course, the Zoom book launch. The bad part is that book launches limp on in this post-pandemic world. The good part is that this will be our only book launch of the year. It is via Zoom, and being hosted by Avid Reader. Tickets are $10, or free if you buy The Chaser Annual 2020.
