And now for something completely different
Dear Reader,
In this business, it’s important, and not just rip off ideas (and catch-phrases) from other people. One thing we’ve noticed in the past few months is the sheer paucity of new podcasts.
Last month alone, only 50 trillion new podcasts were launched. (They’re the figures for inner city Melbourne. It might be more elsewhere). So we’ve decided to use this time in lockdown to do something a bit different, and launch a new podcast series.
I know, I know. You’re thinking: what possible gap is there left in the podcast market that isn’t already done badly by a balding middle-aged American fuck knuckle? It's a hard one.
Originally we wanted to do a true crime podcast. But unfortunately we didn’t know of any crimes that hadn’t already been solved (and then later overturned by the high court of Australia).
So then we decide that we would instead commit the crimes ourselves and take out the middleman, so to speak. The great thing is that by murdering people ourselves, listeners wouldn’t be left with any of that annoying uncertainty that other true crime podcasts, like Serial, suffer from.
Unfortunately, before we could do that podcast, the lockdown laws came into effect, essentially making it a crime to have a dinner party of more than two people. While that meant there was a lot more crime about, it wasn’t the most thrilling listen, to be honest.
So instead, we pivoted, and have instead identified a new gap in the podcast market. There are lots of podcasts put out by the ABC and the Guardian and The Conversation that you know you can trust. But there is a real gap for a news podcast you know you can’t trust.
That’s where The Chaser Report comes in. It’s the only news bulletin you know you can’t trust. It launches today, so check it out here or at Apple Podcasts. And please subscribe to it wherever you get your podcasts.
