Nine new CGIAR initiatives to drive innovation and investment in sustainable agriculture in Vietnam
A portfolio of nine new initiatives under CGIAR’s 2030 Agenda towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has been unveiled in Vietnam. They were launched at a high-profile event on 15 June 2022 in Hanoi, which brought together 60 key stakeholders including ministry leaders and representatives of research institutes, academia, donors and the private sector. CGIAR will roll out the initiatives in Vietnam and other countries of operation starting later this year. More
Media workshop on food safety reporting held in Vietnam to commemorate World Food Safety Day
To celebrate the 4th World Food Safety Day (7 June 2022), a media workshop targeting over 40 Vietnamese reporters and researchers from different disciplines (public health, animal health, agriculture) was organized on the same day in Hanoi. The ‘Deliver food safety messages to the community: an integrating approach between researchers and journalists – the case of animal-sourced food’ workshop discussed ways of better communicating food safety messages to the public. One CGIAR initiative to transform livestock productivity, nutrition and gender inclusion in northwest Vietnam
A 20-21 April 2022 workshop kicked off the One CGIAR initiative on Sustainable Animal Productivity for Livelihoods, Nutrition and Gender Inclusion (SAPLING) in Son La Province, Northwest Vietnam. The workshop brought together 80 key stakeholders from the province including local authorities, farmers, researchers, private sector actors and the SAPLING team. They discussed ways to make the livestock sector in northwest Vietnam more productive, resilient, equitable and sustainable. More
The story of the remarkable life of Alexandre Yersin inspires young people to address public health
On 1 March, ILRI in collaboration with embassies, research institutes and universities in Vietnam launched a short video report entitled ‘The remarkable life of Dr Alexandre Yersin (1863-1943)’ to inspire young people, especially those in the health research and development sector, to take a One Health approach to address zoonotic diseases in the context of many emerging diseases such as the current COVID-19 pandemic. Yersin was a Swiss-French polymath and physician who made invaluable contributions to medicine and the people of Vietnam as a bacteriologist, entrepreneur and public health administrator. More
From national to local level: Leveraging SafePORK impacts on food safety in Vietnam
Since 2017, the ILRI-led ‘Market-based approaches to improving the safety of pork in Vietnam’ or SafePORK project has been developing and evaluating market-based ways of improving the safety of food to reduce the burden of foodborne diseases in the country. The project’s work focuses on informal, emerging and niche markets targeting small- and medium-scale pork value chains. It has achieved meaningful improvements in food safety practices leading to increased income for smallholder pig farmers. More
Genetic gains research to transform smallholder chicken farming in Southeast Asia
The ILRI-led Asian Chicken Genetic Gains, or AsCGG, project has established national innovation platforms that bring together the key value chain actors in smallholder chicken value chain development in Vietnam. The first national innovation platform meeting was held in September 2021 and two community innovation platforms were subsequently established in Quang Binh and Ha Nam provinces in December 2021. The three meetings brought together about 100 participants from local authorities and poultry farmers to discuss profitable small-scale chicken production systems, integrated with locally available feeding resources and improved environmental sustainability. Antimicrobial resistance found in samples across pork retail outlets and slaughterhouses in Vietnam
On 29 March 2022, results of an ‘Analysis of antimicrobial resistance in non-typhoidal Salmonella collected from pork retail outlets and slaughterhouses in Vietnam using whole genome sequencing’ were published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science. The study examined the levels of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in 69 non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) isolates from a variety of pork retail outlets and slaughterhouses around Hanoi, Vietnam. The study found that NTS and AMR levels were high in the samples at pig slaughterhouses and retail stores—regardless of the outlet. More
