CGIAR COVID-19 Hub launched
In June, a new CGIAR COVID-19 Hub was launched. It provides a coordinated research response to the global pandemic threatening the global health systems and posing risks to food security. The hub, which is coordinated by CGIAR in collaboration with the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), will bring together the latest science on agriculture and health to inform a research-based response to the pandemic. World Food Safety Day 2020: Supporting traditional markets to improve food safety in developing-country contexts
ILRI Vietnam joined the rest of the world in celebrating the World Food Safety Day on 7 June 2020. Like in other developing countries, traditional markets and supermarkets are both legitimate food outlets for consumers. While they face different food safety challenges, both are essential to meeting the nutritional needs of people. More

The chicken first crossed the road in Southeast Asia, 'landmark' gene study finds
A study of the chicken’s full genome published on the prestigious Cell Research journal in June 2020 provides new insights into the origin and evolutionary history of domestic chickens. These rich genomic resources will pave the way to exploration of the biocultural history of the relationship between humans and chickens as well as the development of fast-growing, high-quality and cost-effective lineages of chickens. Cambodia's Safe Food, Fair Food initiative reduces risks from animal-source foods
The Safe Food, Fair Food for Cambodia project team is developing interventions to improve sanitation and hygiene of traditional retail markets in 26 provinces of the country. Researchers have introduced more hygienic practices such as separation of ready-to-eat and raw pork or intestines, frequent handwashing by pork handlers and wipe downs of meat-selling surfaces. More
Can COVID-19 spur transformations in food safety in traditional Vietnamese pork value chains?
The ‘Market-based approaches to improving the safety of pork in Vietnam’, or SafePORK project is implementing a package of interventions focusing on improving hygiene conditions at pork retail and slaughter places in the light of COVID-19 to help enhance the safety of food in the country’s traditional pork value chains. Grass roots communications pivotal to preventing and reducing pork-borne diseases in Vietnam
Under the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ)-funded ‘Safer indigenous pork and healthier ethnic minorities in Vietnam through better management of parasitic pig-borne diseases’ project, a grass communication campaign was conducted in March 2020 at grass-roots level to the raise awareness of local people on important pork-borne diseases in northern Vietnam such as trichinellosis (in pigs) and cysticercosis and trichinellosis (in humans). This included a training of trainers for local veterinary and human health staff on prevention of these diseases followed by awareness campaigns at six communes of Da Bac Dictrict, Hoa Binh Province, and designing and distributing 25 posters and 600 flyers on these diseases to these communes. SafePORK project mid-term review
In April 2020, the SafePORK project held its midterm review virtually. The review highlighted key achievements of the project including the development of a gender- and equity-sensitive food safety tool with indicators to measure food safety performance, and the pilot of a package of interventions to improve hygiene practices at abattoirs and wet markets that has shown initial promising results. The representatives from the donor, the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), praised the project’s work so far despite challenges such as African swine fever and COVID-19 pandemic. The ACIAR team recommended that the project consider setting up long-term partnerships with the private sector and addressing the risks and opportunities brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. More

In May 2020, VTV1, the leading Vietnamese state-run media outlet, recently interviewed ILRI’s Hung Nguyen and Tuyet Hanh Tran, associate professor at the Hanoi University of Public Health (HUPH). The interview explored the connections between ecosystem disruptions and emerging and re-emerging infectious human diseases, especially zoonotic diseases (those shared by animals and people) in the context of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Introducing a new livestock project in northwest Vietnam
A workshop was held on 2 June in Son La Province, northwest of Vietnam to intro duce local stakeholders to the new ‘Livestock-led interventions towards equitable livelihoods and improved environment in the northwest Highlands of Vietnam’ project. The event was dedicated to sharing information on the project’s planned interventions with stakeholders and getting their feedback to ensure the project’s interventions meet local needs. More

Training for Cambodian veterinary and market authorities
In February 2020, a training of trainers exercise was organized for about 20 local veterinary and market managers from six provinces in Cambodia to introduce good hygiene practices for improving the safety of pork. The trainees will organize roll-out training to guide pork traders using a training manual developed by the Safe Food, Fair Food for Cambodia project. More
