ILRI's Jimmy Smith and Hung Nguyen recognized for their contributions to Vietnam's agricultural and rural development
Jimmy Smith, former director general of the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), and Hung Nguyen, co-leader of ILRI’s Animal and Human Health program, have been recognized by the Vietnamese government for their contributions to agricultural research and development in the country. They were awarded the ‘Medal for contribution to the cause of agriculture and rural development’ by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) at a ceremony on 3 August 2022 in Hanoi. More

ILRI research on zoonosis, food safety and antimicrobial resistance highlighted at the 2022 Global ODA Forum               
Food safety, zoonoses, antimicrobial resistance and animal health research findings by scientists from ILRI and partners were presented at the 2022 Global ODA Forum for Sustainable Agricultural Development held on 21–22 November 2022 in Seoul, South Korea. More

Vietnam to enhance agricultural innovation in fight against climate change 
MARD and CGIAR co-hosted a forum dubbed ‘Research and innovation for enhanced environmental sustainability, low-emission agriculture, climate change adaptation and mitigation’ at Pan Pacific Hotel in Hanoi on 28 November 2022. The event shared knowledge on sustainable agriculture from programs and projects in Vietnam and other countries as part of efforts to fight against climate change. More

Two new 'One Health' projects launched to improve human health 

An August 2022 workshop in Hanoi kicked off two new projects—the CGIAR Initiative on Protecting Human Health through a One Health Approach and the ICT4Health project funded by the Korean Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. The two projects will help improve human health by using the interdisciplinary One Health approach. More

Vietnam One Health research partnership opens fourth provincial field site

On 4 August 2022, ILRI and partners launched the 4th field site of the Vietnam One Health research partnership in the Agriculture Services Centre in Phu Binh District, Thai Nguyen Province, at an inception meeting hosted by Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry (TUAF) and ILRI. More

Agroecology project supports capacity development for food safety in Laos and Vietnam 

In September 2022, ILRI and partners trained 20 Vietnamese and 55 Laotian stakeholders on food safety and food safety risk assessment. This training by the Agroecology and Safe Food System Transitions (ASSET) project was among its efforts toward transforming the food systems in the Southeast Asia region. More

SAPLING initiative's stakeholder consultation proposes priority activities for northwest Vietnam

In early October, a stakeholder engagement meeting was held in Mai Son District, Son La Province, with Vietnamese partners and farmers on the planned interventions of the ‘Chan-henh’ project which means ‘good and better’. This is the short name of the CGIAR Initiative on Sustainable Animal Productivity or SAPLING, that is working in the country. More

Cambodian taskforce scales up activities in line with country's new food safety law
A taskforce of food safety experts from across Cambodia and a research project team led by ILRI met on 21 October 2022 in Phnom Penh to explore ways to facilitate collaboration between the authorities and researchers in Cambodia for safer food in the country. The meeting was co-hosted by the National Animal Health and Production Research Institute (NAHPRI) and ILRI as part of an ILRI-led component of the Agroecology and Safe food System Transitions, or ASSET project. Assessing and prioritizing wildlife value chains and transmission risk of zoonotic diseases in Vietnam 
Twenty-nine researchers and partners joined a consultation meeting in Hanoi on 8 December 2022 to collectively refine the research agenda for the Work Package 1 on zoonosis under the CGIAR Initiative on One Health. The experts supported the selection of interventions to minimize the risks of diseases transmitted from the wildlife to the human in Vietnam and mapped wildlife value chains for selecting species and identifying key zoonotic pathogens that can spill over to the human population. They also determined the risk pathway along the wildlife value chains and potential groups at risk in two provinces of Dong Nai (Mekong Delta) and Lao Cai (Northwest of Vietnam). More
