CGIAR strengthens partnerships and research with the Ministry of Agriculture for sustainable agriculture development in Vietnam
On 10 December 2021, CGIAR, the largest global agriculture innovation network, convened a coordination meeting with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam (MARD). The meeting was chaired by Le Quoc Doanh, Vice Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, and Jean Balie, regional director of One CGIAR in Southeast Asia and the Pacific. Its purpose was to review the relationship between MARD and CGIAR, and discuss ways to further improve collaboration for sustainable agricultural development in Vietnam. More

The world commemorates One Health Day amidst the pandemic
ILRI and its partners are using a One Health approach to tackle agriculture-associated risks. This involves promoting and facilitating transdisciplinary partnerships to manage zoonotic and foodborne diseases, improve food safety, and reduce antimicrobial resistance (AMR) through the generation and use of knowledge, technologies and products in low-and-middle-income countries (LMICs) of East and Southeast Asia, including Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. New CGIAR initiatives consulting partners to fit national priorities
To implement its 2030 research and innovation strategy, CGIAR hosted a series of initiatives designed to achieve a world with sustainable and resilient food, land and water systems that deliver more diverse, healthy, safe, sufficient and affordable diets, and ensure improved livelihoods and greater social equality, within planetary and regional environmental boundaries. Two of these research initiatives, Sustainable Animal Productivity for Livelihoods, Nutrition and Gender Inclusion (SAPLING) and Protecting human health through a One Health approach (One Health) were consulted in a meeting on 31 July 2021.
Art exhibition showcases artist and farmer views of livestock development in Vietnam
About 120 artworks and photos of livestock from the Vietnam National Fine Arts Museum and the Livestock-led Interventions towards Equitable Livelihoods and Improved Environment in Northwest Vietnam, otherwise known as the Li-chăn project, were displayed in an exhibition launched virtually and physically in Mai Son District, Son La Province in northwest Vietnam in October 2021. Theory of Change (TOC) and preparatory meeting in Dien Bien and Son La provinces to discuss possible activities with local partners under ASSET project
The five-year project Agroecology and Safe food System Transitions (ASSET, 2020 to 2025) operates in four targeted countries of Cambodia, Laos PDR, Myanmar and Vietnam to harness the potential of agroecology to sustainably transform food and agricultural systems. A TOC workshop was organized in June 2021 for Vietnam to develop a preliminary flagship TOC, identify knowledge gaps and needs, and prepare the ground. In November 2021, preparatory meetings were organized in the Dien Bien and Son La provinces in northwest Vietnam to deepen understanding of current agricultural systems and development strategies, and discuss possible activities for agroecology and safe food system transitions in these provinces.
What's next after CGIAR A4NH in Vietnam: Promoting healthy diets through systematic food system transformation
In a closing workshop on 25 November 2021, the managing partners of the CGIAR Research Program on Agriculture for Nutrition and Health (A4NH) sat down with relevant international and national government partners and stakeholders to look back at the implementation years of A4NH. They discussed how upcoming One CGIAR initiatives on Protecting human health through a One Health approach (One Health) and Sustainable Healthy Diets through Food System Transformation (SHiFT) align with existing work and with the country’s food system transformation pathway. - Analysis of African swine fever virus spread model and immune response in warthog in Vietnam and Kenya (2022-2024), funded by the Rural Development Administration National Institute of Animal Sciences (RDA-NIAS) in South Korea.
