Keeping the nutrients in the food system
A policy brief from the Global Panel on Agriculture and Food Systems for Nutrition shows that reductions in food loss and waste—particularly in high-nutrient foods—have the potential to yield substantial nutritional benefits and support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
 
90 years of seminal nutrition research publications
The Journal of Nutrition’s 90th Anniversary Collection highlights key articles that have advanced our basic understanding of nutrition. The highlights include work by IFPRI researchers that documents the critical association between dietary diversity and child nutritional status.
 
Increasing the access to eggs
Eggs are one of nature’s most nutritious foods but have been shown to be infrequently consumed in many low‐income countries, especially by women and children. A study in Maternal and Child Nutrition finds that aggregation of egg production is a feasible and impactful way to bring prices down and increase access in rural areas in many poorer countries.
 
Policies to address antimicrobial resistance in Asia and the Pacific
The “Antimicrobial resistance policy review and development framework,” is FAO’s new regional guide for Asia-Pacific governments. It enables governments to review, update and develop policies to address antimicrobial resistance and antimicrobial use in animal production.
 
Alive & Thrive: Sustained impacts in Bangladesh
A study assessing the impact of Alive & Thrive in Bangladesh concludes that the program has lasting benefits with continued exposure to intensive interpersonal counseling and sustained impacts on infant and young child feeding knowledge and practices.
 
Health-motivated taxes on red and processed meat
Including the social health cost of red and processed meat consumption in the price of red and processed meat could lead to significant health and environmental benefits—in particular in high and middle-income countries—according to a study in PLOS ONE with analyses for 149 world regions.
WFP and Alibaba partner for zero hunger
The World Food Program (WFP) and Alibaba Group are joining forces to achieve SDG 2. Alibaba will provide its technology and resources to support the digital transformation of WFP’s operations including using cloud computing to develop a digital “World Hunger Map” to monitor the status of global hunger.
 
UNSCN calls for contributions for its flagship publication
The United Nations System Standing Committee on Nutrition (UNSCN) invites contributions for the next edition of its flagship, peer-reviewed publication UNSCN Nutrition. The 2019 edition will focus on food environments to enable healthy and nutritious diets.
 
Nutrition and food systems transformations in Eurasia
On November 13, IFPRI, the World Bank, and the CGIAR Research Program on Policies, Institutions, and Markets (PIM) co-organized a policy seminar on “Agricultural and Food Systems Transformation for Better Food Security and Nutrition in Eurasia.” Watch videos from the discussions on recent developments and agri-food transformation in the region.
 
Learning about implementation from program workers and recipients
The Society for Implementation Science in Nutrition (SISN) will host a webinar on December 6 on “Learning About Needs of and Challenges Faced by Program Workers and Recipients.” Researchers will present case studies of observational implementation research for food-assistance programs in the United States and programs for infants and young child feeding in Kenya and India.
 
High-level Malabo Montpellier Forum
The Malabo Montpellier Panel will host its next high-level forum in Rabat, Morocco on December 17 on the sides of the Atlantic Dialogues. Agriculture ministers from 14 African countries and development partners will discuss the recommendations and policy implications of the Panel’s upcoming report on irrigation in African agriculture.
