Building a global roadmap to end hunger
Ceres2030 will build global consensus on the interventions needed to end hunger and transform the lives of the world’s poorest farmers while protecting the environment. This new initiative is a partnership between Cornell’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, IFPRI, and the International Institute of Sustainable Development.
 
U.S. Global Food Security Reauthorization Act signed into law
The Global Food Security Reauthorization Act was signed into law on October 11. The USAID Administrator noted that the U.S. Government's Feed the Future initiative has made significant impact in reducing poverty and hunger and will continue to empower smallholder farmers and strengthen communities and economies to protect and accelerate their progress.
Early childhood development platforms promote nutrition in Malawi
A study in the Journal of Nutrition finds that integrating agriculture and nutrition interventions through early childhood development centers benefited children's diets and reduced stunting among younger siblings of targeted preschoolers in Malawi.
 
Climate change and public health
Climate Information for Public Health Action, a book edited by researchers from Columbia University, explores why, when, and how climate information can and should be incorporated into health research, policy, and practice.
 
Evaluating Egypt’s cash transfer program
An IFPRI policy brief finds that the component of Egypt’s first conditional cash transfer program, Takaful and Karama, that supports poor families with children under 18 had positive impacts on households’ consumption, helped the poor cope with rising prices, and improved diet quality.
 
Cross-sectoral campaign to reduce stunting in Cambodia
The NOURISH Project assessed mid-term results from “Grow Together,” a cross-sectoral stunting prevention campaign in Cambodia using social and behavior change communication. The results showed significant and positive change in the use of health and nutrition services, complementary feeding practices, WASH, and caregivers with young children who have nutrient-rich home gardens and feed their children beneficial animal source foods.
 
Perceptions of Vietnam’s food systems
A baseline assessment of food systems in Vietnam—conducted by A4NH's Food Systems for Healthier Diets Research Flagship—found that key informants generally perceived that Vietnam’s food systems do not necessarily deliver healthy food and consumers generally lack trust in the safety of the food.
 
Urbanization and Child Nutritional Outcomes
Using satellite-based nighttime light intensity data as a marker of urbanization, a study from IFPRI and ILRI researchers finds that nightlight significantly predicts child nutritional outcomes in Nigeria. The findings suggest that—at least for Nigeriaa pattern that extends the benefits of urban agglomeration to larger shares of the population would speed improvements to child nutritional outcomes.
 
Migration, agriculture, and rural development
FAO’s 2018 The State of Food and Agriculture report urges that policies should not stem or accelerate migration but maximize the contribution of rural migration to economic and social development while minimizing the costs.
Sharing lessons to improve school feeding programs
The Global Child Nutrition Forum will take place October 21–25 in Tunis. This is an annual learning exchange and technical assistance event to support countries to develop and implement sustainable school feeding programs.
 
Confronting the new face of malnutrition
On October 29, IFPRI will host the 28th Annual Martin J. Forman Memorial Lecture featuring Barry M. Popkin, W. R. Kenan Jr. Distinguished Professor of nutrition at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. The lecture will focus on understanding the effectiveness of regulatory and fiscal approaches to address the growing challenge of obesity and the double burden of malnutrition.
 
Reducing food loss and waste for improved nutrition
The Global Panel on Agriculture and Food Systems for Nutrition will launch a policy brief on actions that prevent nutrient loss and waste across the food system on November 7 at FAO Headquarters in Rome.
