Deadline extended for My Food, My Future video contest
The deadline to submit a video of your best idea to accelerate progress to end hunger and malnutrition has been extended to October 29. Top submissions will be screened at the event in Bangkok to an audience of decision makers, practitioners, researchers, and other stakeholders from around the world.
Technology firms and international organizations partner to prevent famine
The United Nations, World Bank, International Committee of the Red Cross, Microsoft, Google and Amazon recently launched the Famine Action Mechanism (FAM). FAM is the first global partnership to prevent future famines by working closely with existing systems and using the predictive power of data, machine learning, and artificial intelligence.
SDG progress: fragility, crisis and leaving no one behind
An Overseas Development Institute report concludes: without concerted efforts from the international community to address the needs of people caught in crisis, firstly the SDGs will not be achieved for all, and secondly the gap between this marginalized group and the rest of the world will grow. The report provides recommendations for accelerating progress for all marginalized groups as well as specific steps to deliver progress for people caught in crisis.
 
Promoting homestead gardening in Ethiopia
An IFPRI analysis of a nationwide homestead garden program in Ethiopia finds that water access is the main barrier to its adoption. Better market access encourages home gardening adoption as does greater public promotion, but only in more water-abundant communities.
 
Zinc-biofortified wheat reduces illness among children and mothers
A study published in the Nutrition Journal finds that children in India who ate high-zinc-biofortified wheat experienced 17 percent fewer days with pneumonia and 39 percent fewer days vomiting, compared to children who consumed a lower zinc variety. Mothers who ate high-zinc wheat spent 9 percent fewer days with fever.
 
How participating in women’s groups impacts pregnant women’s nutrition
A study of pregnancy-focused nutrition interventions in Nepal finds: (1) participation in women’s groups with food transfers increased equity in dietary energy allocation within households, (2) participation in women’s groups with cash transfers improved dietary diversity, and (3) participation in women’s groups alone improved diets but effects were mixed.
 
Trade, climate change, and food security
FAO’s report on State of Agricultural Commodity Markets 2018 argues that agricultural trade can help in adapting to climate change and in ensuring food security in two ways: in the short term, trade can help address production shortfalls due to extreme weather events; in the long term, it can contribute towards adjusting agricultural production in an efficient manner across countries.
 
Nutrition-sensitive extension resources
The Global Forum for Rural Advisory Services Nutrition Working Group has created a resource library for materials on nutrition-sensitive agricultural extension and advisory services. Materials include training resources, fact sheets, tools, case studies, and many more.
IFPRI hosts discussion on 2018 SOFI findings
On October 10, IFPRI will host a discussion on the key findings of FAO’s 2018 State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World Report in Washington, D.C. which will be  livestreamed. The report highlights that for the third consecutive year global hunger has risen, now standing at 821 million people today compared to 804 million last year.
 
Global events mark World Food Day 2018
October 16 is World Food Day, which in 2018 will focus on the theme, “Our actions are our future: A #ZeroHunger world by 2030 is possible.” A series of events will take place around the world in conjunction with World Food Day including the 45th meeting of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) on October 15–19 in Rome, and the World Food Prize Events on October 17–19 in Des Moines, Iowa.
 
E-conference on the fall armyworm outbreak in Africa
The emergence and spread of the fall armyworm in Africa poses serious threats to the food security and livelihoods of millions of smallholder farmers. In response, the Sustainable Development Solutions Network’s Thematic Network on Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems will host an e-conference October 22–26.
