Practical lessons on implementing nutrition policy based on evidence
In response to the urgent need for action to reach the global non-communicable disease targets, the first in a series of World Cancer Research Fund International reports provides advice to policymakers on how to design and implement a sugar sweetened beverage tax. It provides guidance on how to stimulate political and public will and how to mitigate the risk of lawsuits and trade disputes.
Advancing equity, equality, and non-discrimination in food systems
The 43rd issue of the United Nations Systems Standing Committee on Nutrition’s flagship publication explores some of the drivers of malnutrition, how they intersect and overlap, and how they intensify the exclusion of certain groups of people.
 
Farmer Nutrition Schools in Bangladesh improve food production and dietary diversity
A study from the SPRING project and Save the Children assesses the effect of farmer nutrition schools on household food production and women’s dietary diversity in Bangladesh. The farmer nutrition school intervention generated rapid and sustained improvement in food production and dietary quality.
 
A global framework for food environment research in low- and middle-income countries
There is a need to create a cohesive research agenda to facilitate food environment research in low- and middle-income countries that face the double burden of undernutrition and obesity. A new paper from the Agriculture, Nutrition and Health Academy’s Food Environment Working Group presents such a global framework with implications for action.
 
Seasonal variation in undernutrition determinants for children
An IFPRI-Cornell review of the influence of seasonal variation on undernutrition during the first 1000 days of life in rural South Asia finds significant seasonal variation for at least one determinant of undernutrition in each of the 14 studies included. More research is needed to clarify the mechanisms of negative effects of seasonal variation on health and nutritional status during this critical period of life.
 
Subsidized fortified wheat programs and maternal health
India’s subsidized fortified wheat programs were largely ineffective in terms of reducing anemia among pregnant women concludes an evaluation by IFPRI researchers. As policymakers expand fortification programs, the researchers note it is critical to ensure that the fortified food is universally available and distributed widely through well‐functioning and popular outlets.
Your input on Feed the Future’s new Learning Agenda
The draft Phase 2 Feed the Future Learning Agenda is open for public comment until September 28, 2018. The Learning Agenda informs the design of Feed the Future-related activities and focuses on eight areas: gender and women’s empowerment; market systems; policy systems; nutrition; risk and resilience; youth; water and WASH; and scaling technologies and practices.
 
UN General Assembly meetings and events on food and nutrition
The 73rd session of the UN General Assembly is underway with several of the side events and concurrent meetings focusing on food security and nutrition:  
Africa Nutritional Epidemiology Conference: From evidence to impact
The 8th Africa Nutritional Epidemiology Conference will take place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia October 1–5, with a focus on “Multi-stakeholder nutrition actions in Africa: translating evidence into policies, and programmes for impact.”
 
Big Data in Agriculture Convention
On October 3–5, the CGIAR Platform for Big Data in Agriculture Convention will take place in Nairobi, Kenya. The event theme, “Decoding the Data Ecosystem,” will explore how the data ecosystem for food security can integrate with real ecosystems worldwide, from the global to the local, across public, private, and non-profit goods.
