To accelerate progress to end hunger and undernutrition around the world, the News in Brief informs partners on emerging research and innovation, developments in global, regional, and national policies and programs, and timely news and events. In Sudan, FAO launched a $72 million Country Programming Framework for 2017-2020 to enhance food security, nutrition, and poverty reduction, support sustainable agriculture, and improve disaster risk management and build resilience.
 
The $36 million Smallholder Agricultural Production Restoration and Enhancement Project in Yemen by the World Bank and FAO supports poor households with enhanced agricultural production for improved income and nutrition, while helping conflict-affected farmers resume crop and livestock production.
 
China issued the 2017-2030 National Nutrition Plan, which details nutrition and health goals on anemia, stunting, and breastfeeding for 2020 and 2030, and highlights the importance of nutrition and health regulations, research and monitoring.
Limited policy options for food reserves and land tenure challenges hinder Uganda’s food security and nutrition, according to the National Planning Authority and WFP’s national review of Uganda’s readiness to end hunger and malnutrition by 2030.
 
HarvestChoice, led by IFPRI, in collaboration with Datawheel and Barefoot Education for Afrika Trust (BEAT), launched Data Africa, an open data visualization platform designed to provide information on agriculture, climate, poverty, and health across 13 countries in Africa South of the Sahara to a wide audience through easily accessible visual narratives.
Support for breastfeeding gains momentum across the globe during World Breastfeeding week (August 1-7): The Malawi Ministry of Health encourages breast milk pumping and parliamentarians in Sierra Leone prioritize breastfeeding; Research finds scaling up breastfeeding practices improves health in Bangladesh and Vietnam; UN highlights need for more investments in breastfeeding, which could offer huge economic returns; and UNICEF and WHO launch a new Global Breastfeeding Collective.
 
The SUN Movement Global Gathering 2017 will bring together SUN focal points and partners in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire on November 7-9 to take stock of progress and challenges, share their innovations and learn what is helping to reduce malnutrition in member countries.
