Social protection programs continue to increase worldwide
The number of social protection programs continues to climb, with more countries introducing new policies to address COVID-19 and its economic fallout. In a real-time review of country measures, the World Bank currently lists 195 countries and territories that have planned or introduced social protection measures in response to COVID-19.

South-South Cooperation for emergency desert locust crisis control
The FAO-China South-South Cooperation (SSC) Programme approved its first emergency project on desert locust crisis control. The project – with a budget of USD 2 million – aims to address the worst desert locust outbreak in decades, which – combined with the impacts of COVID-19 – could have devastating consequences on livelihoods and food security. The project will be implemented in Ethiopia, Kenya, Pakistan, Uganda, and Iran.
Deepest global recession since World War II could double acute hunger
The World Bank’s June 2020 Global Economic Prospects analyzes the global economy in crisis, and forecasts a 5.2 percent contraction in global GDP for this year. The global recession will likely impact food security: acute hunger could double and affect more than 260 million people in 2020.

Food security in uncertain times
The latest volume of the Lancet Planetary Health journal warns that the complex COVID-19 pandemic is morphing into a food crisis which we must urgently avert and discusses wet markets and planetary health, the vulnerabilities of small-scale fisheries to global market systems, and other key topics.
Impacts and threats of the COVID-19 pandemic on food security and nutrition, and options to respond
As the COVID-19 pandemic progresses, the development community is working to understand how the crisis impacts food security, nutrition, and food systems:
  • The latest special issue of the IFPRI Insights newsletter highlights the importance of trust in science and government for successful mitigation responses to COVID-19 and to plan for future epidemics. See IFPRI’s COVID-19 webpage for more evidence, blogs, tools, and events.
  • Corinna Hawkes, Director for Food Policy, City University of London, finds a silver lining in the pandemic: Innovations driven by government, business, and communities have proliferated to enable food to get to people who need it in new ways. These innovations are critical to redesign and strengthen future food systems.
  • Evidence on social assistance programs provides a solid foundation for approaches to strengthen safety net designs during the COVID-19 pandemic. A blog post from IFPRI presents some lessons to boost the effectiveness of safety nets to abate and address the twin health and economic shocks of COVID-19.
