NEWS in BRIEF #92
10 June 2020
To accelerate progress to end hunger and undernutrition around the world, the News in Brief informs partners on emerging research and innovation, developments in global, regional, and national policies and programs, and timely news and events. Please feel free to share any feedback at IFPRI-Compact2025@cgiar.org. Find the latest developments in Compact2025 here.
Capturing and examining country policy responses to COVID-19
The spread of COVID-19, and the range of policy responses to contain the pandemic, exert wide-ranging effects on agri-food systems and livelihoods. IFPRI’s COVID-19 Policy Response (CPR) Portal captures these policy responses and examines their direct and indirect impacts on the crisis in many Compact2025 countries and beyond, including the different types of institutional collaboration governments have used to manage the pandemic, as well as different degrees of citizen compliance. The dataset is regularly updated and can be downloaded.
Global Nutrition Report 2020: Step up to address malnutrition in all its forms
One in nine people are still hungry or undernourished and 149 million children under 5 years of age are stunted globally. In addition, one in three people is overweight or obese. The 2020 Global Nutrition Report finds that progress is too slow and calls on governments, businesses and civil society to step up efforts to address the double burden of malnutrition and redirect resources to communities and people most affected by COVID-19.

Getting biofortified food on everyone’s plate
The HarvestPlus 2019 Annual Report shows the positive impact of micronutrient-rich biofortified crops on health, livelihoods, and lives. HarvestPlus and partners facilitated the release of 27 biofortified crop varieties in 11 countries, bringing the total number of varieties released worldwide so far to 242 in 30 countries.

Climate shocks and violent conflict consistently predict child malnutrition
A Food Security journal article identifies the relationships among child malnutrition and a wide range of factors, finding climate shocks and violent conflict as consistent predictors. These findings can aid advances in predictive modeling of the risks and severity of malnutrition crises and enhance the effectiveness of responses by both development and humanitarian communities.
Impacts and threats of the COVID-19 pandemic on food security and nutrition, and options to respond
As the COVID-19 pandemic progresses, the development community is working to understand how the crisis impacts food security, nutrition, and food systems:
  • The latest special issue of the IFPRI Insights newsletter shines a spotlight on the critical role of water security to COVID-19 resilience and highlights new research on disruptions of Ethiopian dairy chains due to the pandemic. See IFPRI’s COVID-19 webpage for more evidence, blogs, tools, and events.
  • IFPRI and the Micronutrient Forum hosted a virtual event on Micronutrients in Emergencies on June 9. Micronutrient deficiencies—a form of malnutrition also called “hidden hunger”—can easily develop or be exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic. Previous emergencies will inform the discussion on how to meet the micronutrient needs of affected people.
  • A Ceres2030 webinar on June 10 examines how African governments are responding to avert a COVID-19 hunger crisis and share insights on how the international community can support these efforts. Co-hosted by IFPRI, the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), and Cornell University, this event features Ministers from five African countries to share their experiences.
  • The Rockefeller Foundation and EAT will host a virtual global dialogue on June 24 that brings diverse voices together to reimagine food systems in a post-COVID world. The event is free for all and you can register here.
China’s agricultural sector to meet global and domestic goals
The Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) and IFPRI held a launch event on June 3 of two critical reports: (1) The China Agricultural Sector Development Report 2020 (CASDR), which analyzes the agricultural industry conditions in China and the world, and (2) IFPRI’s 2020 Global Food Policy Report, which highlights the need for inclusive food systems to meet global and domestic goals, including ending hunger and malnutrition.

Describe – diagnose – decide: A food systems dashboard for improving diets and nutrition
A webinar on the Food Systems Dashboard took place on June 5 to share how to use the data-driven tool to inform work on improving diets and nutrition. The Dashboard compiles information across the whole food system to assess and strengthen agriculture-nutrition linkages. In doing so, it can help decision makers understand their food systems, identify levers of change, and decide which ones to pull.
