Impacts and threats of the COVID-19 pandemic on food security and nutrition, and options to respond
As the COVID-19 pandemic progresses, the development community is working to understand how the crisis will impact food security, nutrition, and food systems:
- IFPRI launched a new webpage showcasing the breadth of analysis from IFPRI researchers on how COVID-19 is shaping food and nutrition security and development. The webpage features blog posts, events, contributions from IFPRI's country and regional offices, content in several languages, and more.
- The latest special issue of the IFPRI Insights newsletter highlights (1) a new COVID-19 Food Trade Policy Tracker, which monitors food trade restrictions by countries in the face of COVID-19 and (2) the Food Security Portal’s COVID-19 Food Price Monitor for South Asia and Africa south of the Sahara.
- On May 14, IFPRI, the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) and Policy Studies Institute (PSI) will host a virtual event on COVID-19 and its impact on Ethiopia’s agri-food system, food security, and nutrition.
- The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) committed US $40 million to help prevent rural food crises in wake of COVID-19. IFAD appeals to member states, foundations, and the private sector to raise at least US $200 million more.
- A blog post on the World Bank Blog warns that COVID-19 is likely to push 49 million people globally into extreme poverty in 2020, with 23 million estimated to be from sub-Saharan Africa and 16 million from South Asia.
Ending food loss and waste by 2030
A virtual event featured experts who shared their efforts to reach the Sustainable Goal 2030 target on food loss and waste while dealing with COVID-19. The event was co-organized by IFPRI, Champions 12.3, the Embassy of Denmark in Washington DC, and World Resources Institute (WRI).
