The recently launched Data for Nutrition Community of Practice is a free, online platform to share experiences and resources for strengthening the data value chain for nutrition and improving nutritional outcomes in low- and middle-income countries.
Nutritional training in a humanitarian context
A study in Maternal & Child Nutrition examines the impact of behavioral change communication through the Yemen Cash for Nutrition program. It finds significant improvements in knowledge and practices for poor women with young children, including increases in initiating breastfeeding after delivery, exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months, and treating water consumed by adults and children.

Child nutrition and maternal vegetarian status in India
The Journal of Nutrition has published the results of the first systematic exploration of associations between different types of vegetarianism and a range of child undernutrition indicators in a nationally representative sample of Indian households. They show that children of lactovegetarian mothers—compared with children of nonvegetarian mothers—were less likely to be stunted and less likely to be wasted, and their households had better socioeconomic status and were more likely to consume dairy frequently.

Mainstreaming gender- and nutrition-sensitivity in Uganda’s climate change, food, and nutrition policies
A policy brief from the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture, and Food Security explores the extent to which gender and nutrition perspectives are mainstreamed across climate change, food, and nutrition policy documents in Uganda and calls for a multisectoral approach to coordination and implementation and regular joint sector performance reviews.
The global COVID-19 crisis and its impact on food security, nutrition, poverty, and gender
As the COVID-19 pandemic intensifies, governments, researchers, and development practitioners are coming to grips with the potential global implications for food security, nutrition, poverty, and gender:
  • A special issue of the IFPRI Insights newsletter highlights a series of analyses from IFPRI researchers and guest contributors on the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on national and global food and nutrition security, poverty, and development.
  • Maximo Torero, Assistant Director General for Economic and Social Development at FAO, calls for a four-pronged approach to help food supply chains withstand the shock of the pandemic.

Podcast: Will travel for data, to Papua New Guinea
The third episode of IFPRI’s Research Talks podcast shares how IFPRI researchers began engaging in Papua New Guinea, traveling through difficult terrain to collect household data and working with partners to build up capacity to do research and evidence-based policy analysis.

Combining training and low-cost technology could help smallholders fight aflatoxin
Aflatoxin is a common fungal toxin that poses a significant threat to health and economic growth in many developing countries. A SciDevNet piece by IFPRI Research Fellow Vivian Hoffmann shares results from an experimental study to help maize farmers in Kenya improve their practices and preserve their crops by reducing contamination from aflatoxin. Results suggest that low-cost training and technology can have a significant impact on reducing aflatoxin contamination. Further research is needed to understand the impacts at scale.
