Malawi reduces gender bias in nutrition policy
In an article for The Conversation, researchers from the University of Pretoria reflect on their dialogue with policymakers in Malawi to recognize and overcome their gender bias in the country’s nutrition policy and implementation strategy. This approach could provide a template for other countries.
How trade policies can support healthier diets
A brief from the Global Panel on Agriculture and Food Systems for Nutrition shows clear benefits in aligning trade policies with the goal of providing healthy and sustainable diets for all. The brief sets out a framework of issues for policymakers to consider in order to improve diets when developing new trade policies.

Nutrition and the prevention and treatment of maternal depression
An Alive & Thrive technical brief presents evidence on the role of nutrition in predicting and preventing maternal depression and identifies areas for future research and action.

Examining trade-offs between Sustainable Development Goals in India
A study in Earth’s Future explores the potential trade-offs between Sustainable Development Goals related to food production, protection of land resources, and climate change mitigation in India. Agricultural intensification will be a crucial element to help ensure food security and slow down the expansion of cropland and pasture, but policies have to ensure that this intensification is implemented in a way that minimizes biodiversity losses.

Strategies to achieve zero hunger and clean water and sanitation
A UN Standing Committee on Nutrition discussion paper reviews the challenges associated with the complex web of pathways that link water, food security, and nutrition outcomes. It recommends three key strategies: (1) implement nutrition-sensitive agricultural water management; (2) increase the environmental sustainability of diets; and (3) explicitly address social inequities in water-nutrition linkages.

Assessing nutrition information capacity needs in Ethiopia
The Ethiopian Public Health Institute and IFPRI jointly assessed capacity needs for nutrition monitoring, evaluation, policy research, data, and knowledge sharing in Ethiopia. The assessment confirmed that sufficient nutrition-relevant data are being collected, but they are not adequately used and exploited for further analysis. Critical capacity gaps remain for synthesizing evidence and translating research findings into policies and programs.
Global Micronutrient Forum Conference and Summit on Food Fortification postponed
The organizers of the Micronutrient Forum 5th Global Conference and the Second Global Summit on Food Fortification—originally scheduled to take place back-to-back from March 22–27 in Bangkok, Thailand—have postponed these events to a later unspecified date. This follows guidance from the Government of Thailand, in response to the threat of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in Southeast Asia.

Enhanced South-South cooperation needed to transform agriculture and end hunger
The President of the UN General Assembly convened an interactive dialogue on February 12, where participants discussed the need to reduce unacceptably high levels of hunger through South-South and triangular cooperation for agricultural transformation. They urged for policy interventions that support smallholders and highlighted the key role that cooperation agreements can play in coming up with local solutions that can be scaled up.

African countries must accelerate progress to achieve the Malabo Declaration goals by 2025
African countries are making progress toward achieving the Malabo Declaration goals, but the rate of this progress has slowed according to the 2019 Biennial Review Report and Africa Agriculture Transformation Scorecard. In a blog post, Tsitsi Makombe and Julie Kurtz of IFPRI's Africa Office review the report findings including that the continent as a whole is off track to enhance investment finance in agriculture, end hunger by 2025, and enhance resilience to climate variability.
