Myanmar program supports capacity and policymaking for agricultural transformation
The Myanmar Strategy Support Programa joint program of IFPRI and Michigan State Universityaims to enhance national capacity and promote evidence-based policymaking to support agricultural transformation and other broad development goals including nutrition in Myanmar.
Science and digital technologies among top priorities to achieve SDG 2 in Africa
Three experts give their viewpoint drawn from the Brooking Institution’s Foresight Africa 2020 report and set out key policy priorities for achieving food and nutrition security in Africa by 2030: 1) leveraging science to adapt agriculture to climate change, 2) harnessing digital technologies, and 3) preventing fragility and addressing its consequences on food security.
 
Better nutrition must be part of the universal health coverage agenda
The authors of a BMJ analysis suggest that scaling up nutrition interventions as part of universal health coverage will require providing health services for mothers and children, learning from exemplars, and investing in data systems.
 
Urban-oriented metrics needed to measure urban food security
A study in Food Security uses multiple metrics to assess food security in Ghana’s capital city. It finds that most households rely on purchased food from traditional markets, local stalls and kiosks, and street hawkers. These results highlight the limitations of using the conventional rural-centric food security measurement approaches in an urban context and underline the need for comprehensive urban-oriented food security research and policy agendas across Sub-Saharan Africa.
 
Modeling solutions for nutrition-sensitive agriculture in Kenya and Vietnam
A study in Agricultural Systems modeled the potential of crop diversification options for meeting household dietary requirements while also improving economic performance for smallholder farms in Kenya and Vietnam. The results indicate that adding even small areas of novel crops can improve household income and nutrition.
Podcast highlights efforts to scale up nutrition for the poor in Bangladesh
The second episode of Research Talks—a monthly podcast from IFPRI—explores how the Agriculture, Nutrition, and Gender Linkages (ANGeL) project used trainings to directly empower poor people in Bangladesh. The government of Bangladesh is now implementing ANGeL nationwide.
 
How China can address threats to food and nutrition security from the coronavirus outbreak
A blog post by researchers from IFPRI and China Agricultural University explores how the coronavirus outbreak could impact food and nutrition security in China. Recommendations moving forward include monitoring food prices and strengthening market supervision, enabling smooth logistical operation of supply chains, and introducing enabling policies for agriculture.
 
Bill and Melinda Gates reflect on the first 20 years of their foundation and the way forward
In their 2020 annual letter, Bill and Melinda Gates recount lessons learned from the first 20 years of their foundation’s investments in health and education as well as new directions for the future, including climate change and gender equality. They note that future funding for global health will include exploring new ways to prevent malnutrition, and they point to the importance of helping farmers adapt to the effects of climate change.
 
Outbreak of locusts in East Africa has experts concerned for food security
Swarms of locusts have already devastated crops in Kenya and Somalia and threaten other countries in East Africa. The insects’ damage to crops is a major threat to food security in the region.
 
Webinar provides tools for decisionmakers to select optimal nutrition interventions
USAID Advancing Nutrition will host a webinar on February 19 featuring Optima Nutrition and Micronutrient Intervention Modelling (MINIMOD). These two tools can help governments select the best set of nutrition interventions for their needs and optimize the impact of their nutrition funding.
 
'Getting gender right' is essential for the sustainability of food systems
IFPRI Senior Scientist Elizabeth Bryan reflects in a blog post on the importance of considering gender at all stages for sustainable food systems. She highlights research exploring how men and women may be exposed to different climate risks and experiences and have different capacities and preferences for how they respond to climate shocks and stressors.
 
Webinar explores barriers to antenatal care to improve iron and folic acid supplementation
On February 26, the Society for Implementation Science in Nutrition will host a webinar presenting a new approach for understanding and addressing barriers in anemia control delivery systems drawing on work with the Baby-friendly Community Initiative in Kenya.
