Turkey hosted the Global South-South Development Expo 2017. A new report by UNOSSC and the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) was launched in Antalya, Turkey. Presenting the report, Amb. Sudqi Al Omoush, Deputy Secretary General of the UfM, explained that the publication highlights the role of the UfM in facilitating regional cooperation and strategic partnerships with key stakeholders in the Euro-Mediterranean region. In Antalya, Turkey, a new joint publication by UNDP and UNOSSC was launched jointly by Mr. Khaled Abdelshafi, Director, UNDP Regional Hub in Amman, and Mr. Jorge Chediek, Envoy of the Secretary-General on South-South Cooperation and Director of UNOSSC. The winners of the first global Youth4South Solution Awareness Contest were announced at the Global South-South Expo 2017 in Antalya, in an effort to promote the South-South Youth Leadership Initiative in advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. See the winning solutions.

The South-South and Triangular Cooperation for Agricultural Development and Enhanced Food Security (SSTC-ADFS) partnership initiative aims to improve the quality of life of rural inhabitants through supporting countries in identifying and replicating successful solutions in the agricultural sector.

In this section, the Division for Arab States, Europe and the CIS presents an overview of some of the newest development solutions placed on the southsouthworld.org mapping portal, which was developed with the support of the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) and UNDP RBAS. This mapping tool is intended to provide "one-stop shop" access to practical, easy-to-use expertise in the broad range of South-South cooperation mechanisms and solutions in the two regions.

Morocco: Deficit Irrigation
Deficit irrigation can be used to increase the water-use efficiency of a crop by eliminating irrigations that has little impact on yield. The resulting yield reduction may be small compared with the benefits gained through diverting the saved water to irrigate other crops for which water would normally be insufficient under traditional irrigation practices.

For the purpose of sustainable orchard management, an innovative solution of single trunking and pruning of pomegranate trees has been developed and implemented by the Aegean Agricultural Research Institute in Turkey.

The Western Balkans: Flood Risks Maps
Montenegro undertook the development of the plans for protection and rescue from floods and mapping vulnerable areas of flooding in 5 municipalities in the country in order to improve the flood risk disaster management system at the local level, which was also of benefit to other Western Balkan countries.

Montenegro: Reform of Legal Aid
UNDP in cooperation with the Ministry of Justice in Montenegro, and with the support of the Governments of the Netherlands and Norway, has launched a project on reforming the legal aid system to make legal counseling affordable and widely available.

Kenya: A Water Kiosk at Schools
A water kiosk at school was created as a (primary) school-based business, managed by the students, selling clean tap water to community residents. Since November 2014, 10 water kiosks in 10 schools & communities in 4 counties (Nairobi, Bungoma, Siaya and Homabay) have been built across Kenya.

Thailand successfully hosted the inaugural “ASEAN – EU Dialogue on Sustainable Development: Towards Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals” on 17 November 2017 in Bangkok to provide visibility and political support to the sustainable development dimension of ASEAN-EU cooperation. Learn more.

Youth4South Solutions Awareness Contest
|
|
|
|
|
As part of the contest, individual young leaders or youth-led organizations from developing countries were invited to nominate their development solutions addressing one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Development solutions were submitted in the format of a short YouTube video of up to 100 seconds and the top winning solutions were awarded Solution Awareness Trophies, of US$5,000, $2,000, and $1,000 for the first, the second, and the third place respectively. The Solution Awareness Trophies will be used to cover travel, accommodation, and other relevant costs contributing to the demand-driven South-South knowledge exchange involving the winning youth leader/youth-led organization.
