In my first major speech as Chancellor, I announced increased funding for the people's priorities; policing, schools and the NHS. This funding will deliver on the spending promises made during the leadership election, provide government departments certainty over their budgets and clear the decks to focus on Brexit. We're moving from a decade of recovery to a decade of renewal.
To support our excellent police force, we will be providing an extra £750 million to begin the recruitment of 20,000 new police officers, giving the police the resources and powers they need to keep our streets safe. This will also mean more bobbies on the beat in West Mercia, giving local residents greater peace of mind.
An extra £2.1 billion will be invested into education next year, with primary and secondary schools receiving an increase in minimum per-pupil funding by 2021-22. Furthermore, teachers across the country will benefit from an increased starting salary of £30,000 in the year beginning 2022-23. This funding is a significant boost for Worcestershire schools and for schools nationwide.
As well as the maintenance of, or increase in every departments budget in real terms, our NHS will now start seeing a £33.9 billion cash increase to support its front line services.
As your local Member of Parliament, I have always fought for well-resourced public services and a fiscally responsible government. As your Chancellor, I have the opportunity to put these beliefs into action – for both Bromsgrove and the country.
In the constituency, I thoroughly enjoyed my recent visits to Primrose Hospice and Busy Bees nursery. Both benefit from possessing such fantastic and welcoming staff and I thank them for their hard work.
I've also enjoyed hosting local surgeries. My most recent surgery in Rubery was very well-attended and it was great to stock up on casework.
It was also brilliant to see that Bromsgrove's unemployment rate remains low at just 2.3%. There's more work to be done, but encouraging progress has been made since 2010.
