Hi <<First Name>>

ESOS Phase 2 is in full swing. New Carbon Reporting regime follows right behind it...

We're now well into January 2019 and many businesses are now in full swing completing their Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) Phase 2 compliance.

This is going to be a big year for sustainability professionals, with the new Streamlined Energy & Carbon Reporting (SECR) replacing/updating a raft of old legislation (e.g. CRC etc).

Away from legislation, our Tree Planting programme is in full flow - read about the locations and projects we have lined up for the coming months.

Our ESOS Phase 2 Promise to You

Many businesses have a financial year that runs Jan-Dec; which means that for those businesses it is time to start your ESOS Total Energy Calculation (TEC).

You will recall that your TEC needs to include 31 Dec 2018 and this is the most logical way to do this (unless you wish to annoy your finance team by requesting data from across 2 financial years!).

If you have not secured an ESOS Lead Assessor to either help you with the work or to sign off your work, we strongly recommend that you do so. Demand for lead assessor support will continue to be very strong and accelerate over the coming months. Carbon Footprint has a team of ESOS Lead Assessors ready to help (demand for ESOS Lead Assessors is again expected to outstrip supply) .

We promise to be able to support all our existing clients through ESOS Phase 2 (whether you were in ESOS Phase 1 or not)  - to get this we ask you to confirm your project with us by end March 2019.

As for the on-site energy audits - remember to complete your desk-based assessment before you set foot on site - lots can be gleaned from an in depth study of a 12 month dataset, such as identifying energy hot spots or high use aspects of transport which can help you make the most of the audits and ensure you do not miss anything important. Look and study before you survey.

Take a look at our ESOS webpage for more information and the ESOS crib sheet.

Finishing Your ESOS - What comes next?

As a large entity 'in' ESOS, you are very likely to also be impacted by Streamlined Energy & Carbon Reporting (SECR) consultation - this you will remember replaces CRC and updates Mandatory GHG reporting.

SECR means:
  • Annual Reporting of your carbon emissions  - at least scopes 1 & 2. Dates run with your financial year
  • Carbon Reports go in the Directors' Report within your Annual Report & Accounts
  • FTSE Main market companies - you have been reporting your carbon footprint now for a while - you will need to report reduction actions made (between years)
  • Updates to Climate Change Levy (CCL) - increased rates for energy use
How is this different from ESOS?

SECR uses the UK's definition of a large entity for its' qualification criteria, whilst ESOS relates to the EU's definition of a large entity. Additionally, SECR requires yearly monitoring and reporting rather than once every 4 years. For FTSE main market companies, SECR also requires reporting of global energy usage not just those for UK sites.

Companies qualify for SECR if they satisfy 2 or more of the following criteria in a year:
  • Turnover of >£36 million
  • Balance sheet total of >£18 million
  • Number of employees >250
For financial years starting on or after 1 April 2019, you will be required to report scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions within the Director's Report section of your Annual Report.

Tree Planting Update

The schools are back and we are already tree planting all over the UK, from Scotland down to the South Coast and across to Wales.

We have trees allocated to another 53 different locations for the next 2 months - 50 of which are schools, helping to educate and engage students in environmental issues.

Hedgerow projects are particularly popular at the moment. Take a look at our tree planting to see what tree species we have.

We post regular updates on Tree Planting and Carbon Offsetting activity on our News page and our Twitter - be sure to visit for the latest news.

Don't forget that you can get stuck in with the tree planting yourselves with corporate tree planting events - find out more about getting involved
