Happy New Year from all of us at Carbon Footprint!
2018 has already started with quite some focus on the global impact of waste on our planet, which we expect to be a recurrent theme during the year. The value of waste is highlighted - as well as the more obvious aspects of reducing resource use in the first instance. Carbon and energy management are also analogous to this - with programmes such as Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS), preserving fuel and energy resources (and associated carbon) is merely half the story - the other half being about cost savings to businesses and organisations and this is exactly why many businesses are getting started with their ESOS to get the financial savings now.
If your business is like many and you completed your financial year at the end of December 2017, now is the time for you to complete your Carbon Footprint Appraisal for 2017 and offset unavoidable carbon emissions where appropriate. In addition if - and it's a big if - your company is deemed to be a large Public Interest Entity (read on) you will need to prepare your first Non Financial Report under new EU Regulations ( 'Brexiting' UK companies that qualify will still need to comply).
Here's the headlines to start your year and a link to our 2018 Carbon Crib Sheet - featuring key metrics and industry dates.

Annual Carbon Footprint Reporting & Verification
If your financial year ended in December, now is the time to start your Carbon Footprint appraisal - you may be doing this for the first time or you may be a 'seasoned pro'. Here are our tips on making this a a successful and smooth process
- Know if you have a formal compliance date for reporting - e.g. if your business is in the FTSE main market, your results must be presented in your Annual Report & Accounts
- Get organised - make a plan and be realistic about what data you can reasonable access
- Make friends in Finance and HR - you will need to access data on energy & fuel spend, flights taken, car travel expenses and top level company accounts information
- Make sure you are working with the right carbon metrics - you will need the correct conversion factors from the BEIS Carbon Conversion factors
- Get it checked - If you are assessing your business's carbon footprint yourself (no mater how good you are at MS Excel) get someone else to check your work (ideally someone who is not involved in the project but understands carbon footprint calculation methodology)
- Present it well - make sure your results are presented in a format easily understandable by your Executive Board - we suggest using the Mandatory GHG Reporting format which is simple and a means by which many other businesses report theirs
- Use it - don't let the results just sit in a file, use them to generate aims and carbon reduction targets for the business and implement them. Set up KPIs ands measure their impact - it is so much easier to enthuse your team's to continue reducing carbon, once they can see the benefits that the business gains from it
- Communicate it - get the Top Team to commit to communicating the results of the Carbon Footprint assessment and why it matters to your business. Celebrate when carbon reductions are made

EU - Large Entity Non Financial Reporting
Non-Financial Reporting comes into force for businesses completing their financial year from end Dec 2017 for large entities (>500 employees) that are deemed also to be within the public interest - so-called Public Interest Entities.
What's a PIE? Broadly this is a business whose shares are traded on a regulated market or provide credit/insurance type financial services.
What will I need to report and where? You will be reporting on aspects such as your business's environmental, employee diversity & human rights performance. The reporting will be alongside your usual annual reporting.
