The Carbon Quarterly Newsletter
Winter 2021 has seen a flurry of activity and exciting progress for Carbon Engineering and the carbon dioxide removal industry as a whole. We’re seeing a growing global recognition of the need for carbon removal, as well as increased awareness of Direct Air Capture itself. In the last three months, CE has launched a new permanent carbon dioxide removal service, progressed construction of our Innovation Centre, and been recognized with a prestigious award. We are pleased to see the momentum in support of our technology and mission, and look forward to the rest of 2021.

Read below for more details on this recent progress, as well as media coverage, industry insight, and what we’re reading, watching and listening to right now.

Quote we like

“Within a few years, I had become convinced of three things:

  1. To avoid a climate disaster, we have to get to zero greenhouse gas emissions.
  2. We need to deploy the tools we already have, like solar and wind, faster and smarter.
  3. And we need to create and roll out breakthrough technologies that can take us the rest of the way.”
—Bill Gates, from How to Avoid a Climate Disaster

Carbon Engineering Updates

Above: Construction progress at CE's Innovation Centre in Squamish, BC.

Industry milestone: CE has launched a new permanent carbon dioxide removal (CDR) service with Shopify as our first customer; Shopify has reserved 10,000 tonnes of CDR capacity. With this new service, organizations pay a small deposit to reserve capacity from a facility that will capture and permanently store atmospheric CO2 using CE’s Direct Air Capture technology and standalone sequestration. The remainder is due once the carbon dioxide has been physically removed, permanently stored deep underground, and independently verified. Get in touch to learn more.

Carbon removal insight: We released a Carbon Removal Insight Report in March featuring Q&A’s with notable figures in the private, policy and investment sectors in North America.

New headquarters progress: Construction of CE’s Innovation Centre is progressing swiftly, with almost all of the major pieces of equipment now installed.

A cleantech honour: CE was awarded the 2021 North American Company of the Year Award by Cleantech Group–an honour bestowed upon the highest-ranked North American company on the prestigious Global Cleantech 100 list.

Partner news: CE’s US development partner, 1PointFive, has selected global EPC firm Worley for the front-end engineering and design phase of our first joint DAC facility in the US.
