Wuhan Virus Watch

Virus spread and reactions  /

• Infection cases are continuing to rise worldwide, standing at 2,096 as of Sunday evening. The vast majority of those cases — 2,058 — were in China, while 12 foreign countries reported 38 cases. Canada confirmed its first case of coronavirus infection. Thailand counted its eighth case, while Japan reported its fourth. California confirmed a case, the first in the state and the third in the U.S.

• In China, more than half of the confirmed cases — 1,052 — were reported in Hubei, the central province around Wuhan, the epicenter of the virus outbreak.

• The wealthy coastal provinces of Guangdong and Zhejiang are the only two regions outside Hubei to have more than 100 confirmed cases each, with 111 and 104, respectively.

• Out of China’s 34 provincial-level regions, Tibet is the only one to have reported zero infections.

Beijing and Tianjin have suspended coach services to and from the cities in a bid to slow the outbreak of the virus.

•  The French government arranged for French citizens to be evacuated from Wuhan to Changsha city, Hunan province, via shuttle, according to a statement (link in French) by the French Consulate General in Wuhan.

Medical updates  /

At a Sunday press conference, China’s top health official said the coronavirus's transmission ability is strengthening, infections could continue to rise, and the general situation nationwide is in still in the early stages of spreading

Officials also acknowledged the shortage of medical clothing and discussed possible solutions.Hubei province alone needs 100,000 sets of protective gowns a day, while the entire production capacity in China is about 30,000 in normal circumstances. The Spring Festival holiday has reduced actual capacity to about 13,000.

Officials say that domestic factories must gear up to full production; China must tap into its central reserves; health officials need to reconcile domestic and international standards; and the central government is purchasing supplies overseas — 220,000 gowns from abroad are on their way.
